Salary course

The salary course is the maximum wage ceiling of a team in the American major sports, having for goal to limit the accumulation of large wages in only one team and thus to guarantee a certain equity.

NBA

For the season 2007 in NBA, the ceiling is fixed at 53,135 million dollars (+4,6 million compared to the last year). At the time of the season 1984-1985, this ceiling had been fixed at 3,6 million dollars.

It was founded to limit the high wages in the League in order to guarantee the profitability of the teams. There exists and was many exceptions or installations with this principle, like the Luxury tax, amends for authorized going beyond.

NFL

Called " hardware cap" in NFL the ceiling is approximately 82 million dollars.

NHL

The salary course was fixed at 50 million dollars. The wages of a player then lie between 450.000 and 7,5 million dollars per year. The salary course was the cause of the complete cancellation of the season 2004 of NHL.

MLB

In MLB, there are not really a salary course, but a principle of fine for the teams having very high wage bills, like the New York Yankees.
