History

March 14th, 847, the Count Otton makes gift with the abbey of Condat (become Saint-Claude thereafter), of a marshy vast domain, planted willows and osieries, surrounding the Sanne river. It is in the sector of the priory that 4 or 5 monks will develop their small monastery. The name of Salegiae Salibicus is given to this planted valley of willows ( Salegine means “saulée” in French), from where the name of Salaise.

With the priory for cradle, the village develops little by little during the centuries, initially parish depending on the civil administration of Roussillon under the Ancien Mode, then common starting from 1790. With the wire of time, various orthographies will be used: Salèzes, Sallaises, Sallaize, Sallèze, Salaizes, Salaise and Salaize, but on December 13rd, 1920 an order of the prefect gives its current name to the commune. At the beginning of the century, Salaise counts 901 inhabitants. Today Salaise counts some nearly 4.000

Excavations were carried out in the nave of the church of the priory of 1990 to 1993. They were directed by J. - F. Reynaud (University Light Lyon II and CNRS) and were financed by the town of Salaise (with the participation of the Ministry for the Culture and the General advice).

the crypt was classified by the Historic buildings in 1914. Some objects: goblets out of glass found in tombs, foundation of a bell mould, low-relief whose two lions holding a head between their legs were restored and will be emphasized during the final restoration of the site.

Perhaps the fountain Saint-Juste (first mention at the XVIIe century) was built by pilgrims to honor St Right with Condat. Certain people testified that this water had beneficial virtues to look after the malignant fevers of the marshes, but also bites of snake! the bridge with the monks (XIIe and XIIIe century) is the oldest bridge of Salaise and often underwent the attacks of believed of Sanne, in particular in 1993, where one of the three arches was carried. It was rebuilt in the style of origin.

Rebatière was set up by Antoine Régis Rebat, lord of Ozon, in the middle of XVe century (1453). At the firm simple beginning strengthened, it nevertheless kept its aspect “structures Italian” because Musino were the owners of 1520 to 1664: postern, machicolation, tower pepper plantation. Also let us note a very beautiful hood from the Dauphine.

Trianon has kept the specific aspect of regional construction: marriage of the rollers and wood. This building was used as magnanery (breeding of worms with silk). Inside the chimney remains which made it possible to heat the rooms where the worms developed and wove their cocoons. A device of pulleys for the transport of the baskets of end products is still in place.

the Old Mill (before 1686) used as driving energy water thanks to a paddle wheel. It remains only little of things of this past of flour-milling.

THE PRIORY

Preserved in a bosky bower, in strong contrast with giant industries of the plain, the priory of the monks of St Claude makes go up the origins of the borough at the time Carolingian. The bedside of the church preserves a Romance pace whereas the nave was rebuilt tardily (date on the pediment of the frontage), as well as part of the priory. It is in 847 pennies the reign of Lothaire I that the monks of Condat (Saint-Claude) founded concealed it Salegiae thanks to the donations of the count Otton, lord of the place, his Adalsinde wife and their son the Amblard monk; the church, which were useful at the same time for the monks and the faithful ones, and the priory are mentioned in 1184. Excavations, almost exhaustive, were carried out in the nave.
