Sal Nistico
Sal Nistico (Salvatore Nistico) is a Saxophoniste tenor of American Jazz born the April 2nd 1948 with Syracuse (New York) and deceased the March 3rd 1991 with Bern (Suisse).
Not to confuse with the arranger Sam Nestico, who according to certain sources is his cousin (?). Both worked for Count Basie.
Biography
Sal Nistico begins its career with the Alto saxophone before passing to the tenor. It begins towards, 1956, in orchestras of Rhythm and blues. From 1959 to 1960, he plays in the “Brothers Jazz” of Chuck and Gap Mangione.
Its career really starts when it becomes, in 1962, saxophonist in the big band of Woody Hermann. In the beginning, rather classified musician Hardware bop, it specializes in the jazz in Big band S. In addition to for Hermann (1962-1965, 1968-1970, 1971,1981-1982), it works for Count Basie (1965, 1967), Buddy Rich and Don Elect. In the Eighties, he becomes musician “free lance”, working especially for the studios, but occurring also sometimes with the head of his own small formations.
