Sakas

The Saka are Indo-European people which lived until in 300 after J. - C. in an area covering Kazakhstan, Ouzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and part of Iran, of the Ukraine, mounts Altaï and of Siberia in Russia. The majority of the researchers regard them as a branch of the Scythes.

“Saka” is a Persian name, whereas “Scythian” is a Greek name. The Chinese knew them under the name of “Sai” (塞, marked * sək in old Chinese).

Among the neighbors of Saka one finds the Sarmates, Issedones and Massagetae. One knows little thing of the language of Saka, but it seems to have been in the beginning a family member Iranian (although some wonder whether it were the case for all the layers of their company, or only for the dominant classes at various times).
