Sakai (ja 堺市; Sakai-shi ) is a city of the Préfecture of Ōsaka, Japan.
Geography
In 2006, the population of the city is estimated at: 831005 inhabitants for a surface of 149,99 km, is a density of: 5596.66 inhabitants per km.
Inheritance
- One can find in Sakai the Kofun of the Nintoku emperor (largest of the city) surrounded by others kofun smaller;
- the Ebaraji temple, founded in 704 by Gyoki.
Industries
Sakai for a long time produces artisanal products such as the carpets, the Yukata and of the knives.
History
- During Japanese antiquity, Sakai was in a rich area. The kofun of Nintoku which is in the city was built at that time;
- Sakai thrived for the period Muromachi (1338 - 1573), whereas it was directed by commercial rich person, the city was described as “Venice of Asia” by the European missionaries who unloaded in Japan;
- 1550 and 1564, of the Christian missionaries unload in Sakai;
- 1868 : the prefecture of Sakai is created, Sakai is the capital. Incidental of Sakai between France and Japan;
- 1881 : the prefecture of Sakai is absorbed by the prefecture of Osaka;
- Sakai obtained its statute of city on April 1st 1889;
- 1920: the population of Sakai reaches them: 84995 inhabitants.
