Saint Nazaire (martyr)
See also: Saint-Nazaire (homonymy)
Saint Nazaire was born in Rome in the first century from the Christian era. His/her father was a senior official of the administration of the Roman army; his/her mother - that the Church honors under the name of Holy-Perpetuates , was a disciple of Saint-Pierre. The name Nazaire has a Hebraic etymology, " nazîr" meaning " consacré".
Having adopted the Christian faith, Nazaire gave up its goods and decided to go to preach the Gospel in Gaulle. It passed the the Alps and skirting the Isere; its first steps undoubtedly carried out it in Grésivaudan but the details miss on its apostolic route. It is known, however, that it went to Cimiez - small village close to Nice - where it met its disciple Celse of which it was not to separate any more. Its zeal upset the governor of Cimiez, which made it throw in prison, and it would undoubtedly have paid its life without the intervention of the woman of the governor. Driven out, Nazaire and Celse took again their sticks of preachers and one finds them with Embrun, Geneva, Autun and finally with Trier. The latter was the seat of the court of Belgian Gaulle. Their preaching will attract the lightnings of Cornélius to them, governor of the city. Conduits once again in prison, they have to be condemned to the drowning; during their transport, their boat is attacked by an appalling storm, which they miraculeusement alleviated. To thank them for this wonder which saved the life to them, their guards released them. Passing the Alps again, their return to Milan their was fatal. Condemned by Anolin judge, they had the head sliced into 56 of our era, under the reign of the emperor Néron. In 395, Saint-Ambroise, bishop of Milan, had the revelation, in a dream, place where the two saints had been buried: it was in a garden out of the city. The bodies were exhumed, perfectly preserved, and they were transported in the Basilica of the Saints Apostles. The relics of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse are always in the church Saint-Ambroise with Milan (Italy).
