Saint Arède was born between 510 and 516, in Limoges; he is the son of Jocundus, noble rich person Gallo-Roman. The young boy was sent to the Monastère Vigeois where he studied. To the 14 years age, it was sent, with Metz, near the king Théodebert Ier of which he was the chancellor. Arédius left the court, where the life was dissolue, to join Nizier, bishop of Trier. It converts with the Christian Religion; when he sang the Psaume S, a dove went down from the sky and flew around him, Arédius tried to drive out it, but this one was placed above its head. The Colombe remained at Arédius during thirty days. With died of his father, it joined his Pelagie mother, in a villa Attane with-place. Arédius was withdrawn as a hermit close to the family villa, but his/her mother pointed out it and it founded a Monastère. It made, during its life, of many Pèlerinage S and based on its road of the monasteries and of the Prieuré S. Arédius had close relations with the kings Mérovingiens and it in the USA to improve the living conditions of Limousins. In 573, holy Pelagie died and was buried in the monastery which his/her son had founded. In 591, after a last pilgrimage with Turns, Arédius trespassed and was buried with the foot of the chorus of the church of its monastery. In its will, it gives its goods to the monasteries of Vigeois, of Saint-Martial of Limoges, Saint Martin's day de Tours and that of Attane. The fame of Arédius attracted many pilgrims with Attane, around the monastery a city developed. About the year 900, the monastery was transformed into college of Chanoine S. During the 12th century, the city increases and overflowed of the rampart S which surrounded the Abbaye. Craft industries were created, of the Moulin S and of the Tannerie S developed. To died from the Abbot Bernard de Comborn, in 1183, the Château of Saint-Yrieix (the Tower of Plô) passes to the hands of the Viscount of Limoges, thus in the city, there were two “Seigneur S”, the chapter and the Viscount. In the suburbs, fairs are held twice a year: the day of the Pentecost and at the date birthday of died of Yrieix saint, on August 24th. In August 1307, the chapter and the Philippe IV the Beautiful one draw up a contract of “pariage” which entrusts the functions of justice to royal officers chosen by the king and the chapter. The blazon of the city testifies to this contract: flowers of lily on the left and a stick on the right. In 1565, the king Charles IX grants to the middle-class men of the town of create a échevinage or municipality. Thus five aldermen were elected every year, however the viguiers of the king kept their prerogatives of justice. Four years later, Henri IV remains close to collegial before leaving for the Bataille of the Rock-the Bee. During the 17th century, two Couvent S settled extra-muros: the Récollets and the Clarisses; the Penitent Blue ones were also established them in Saint-Yrieix. In 1750, an edict of the king orders the installation of a Sénéchaussée in Saint-Yrieix, but the court of commun run pariage is at the same time removed. The justice of Saint-Yrieix extended then until Payzac.

In 1793, the canons refuse to lend oath to the civil constitution of the clergy, they are then stopped and imprisoned in Limoges, one of them dies in the prison. The canons will be taken along to Pontons Rochefort where eights of them will die.

Meanwhile, a surgeon of the city named Darnet announces to a Apothicaire the existence of ground used by his wife to make her Lessive. The analysis reveals the purity of the Kaolin; in 1771, Darnet is charged, in the name of the king, directing the extraction with it. Since 1774, a factory of Porcelaine is installed in Seynie close to the city. It is as in Saint-Yrieix, as was exploited the last mine of Or of the European Community. The mine of Bourneix employed 85 people and produced more than 2 tons per annum. It closed its doors in 2001, after 100 years of activity and of the gold bearing millenia of activities in the Limousin.
