Andre, Antoine THOMAS, (November 29th 1857 - May 17th 1935)

Elementary school of Saint-Yrieix, it enters then to the Charlemagne College where it obtains several nominations with the open Competition. Receipt 2nd at the School of Chartres (1875), it follows there teaching of P.Meyer and G.Paris to the School of the High Studies, and in fate in 1878 the first of its promotion with a thesis on the provincial States of central France under Charles VII. It carries out, in 1879, a philological Mission in the south of the Creuse. It is then named professor of language and literature Southerners at the University of Toulouse (1883) where it will remain until in 1889. It will be then titular pulpit of Romance philology in the Sorbonne and will occupy this station during 44 years (1889 - 1933) while teaching at the School of the High Studies (1895 - 1910). He is elected Membre of the Academy of the Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres in 1904. Each summer, it returns to spend its holidays to Saint-Yrieix and enjoys to find the rustic life of its childhood. It is in the small cemetery of its village that it is buried in 1935. It leaves before all the reputation of a philologist and etymologist. For Creusois, he is the rapporteur of the philological Mission in the south of Hollow, only scientific study which one has on the patois of the S. - O. and of the S. - E. He is also the author of innumerable " étymologiques" mixtures; in which, prudently, it " never give up the two guides of the philologist: phonetics and the sémantique" and frequently borrows materials of its notes " with former French, with old of Provence and the so rich funds of our speeches provinciaux" But its vocation was initially that of a historian, attache on the one hand, being studied of the institutions of the medieval time, and on the other hand, with all that relates to the history of the Limousin and Walk before 1500. Philologist or historian, of all the creusois authors from which notoriety extended to the foreigner, Antoine Thomas is undoubtedly that which adhered most narrowly to his soil, of which it had thoroughly the patois since his childhood.

Victor, Andre THOMAS, (February 12th 1874 - May 4th 1953) Brother of the precedent, it makes his secondary studies in Toulouse, Guéret and Paris, where it continues higher learning, obtaining there the license (1892) then the science doctorate physics and the diploma for the occupation of pharmacist 1st class (1908). Its career will proceed mainly with Clermont-Ferrand as assistant professor (1906), part-time lecturer (1912) and finally full professor with the pulpit of industrial chemistry (1922). He collaborates in the treaty of inorganic Chemistry of Moissan (1904 - 1906), with the review of Auvergne with a study on Hollow industrial and agricultural one (1906 - 1907). Among its work are to be announced various works on the dyes, the technology of industrial painting, the basic Concepts of quantitative analysis (1912) and of the Lessons of organic chemistry (1932).

Theodore Christmas

December 25th 1853 - Saint-Maixant (Digs) May 19th 1937 - Saint-Yrieix-the-Mountain (Digs)

Christmas 1853 some share in the hamlet of Montmary close to Saint-Maixant in Hollow… certain Louise-Cecile, without fixed residence, is giving rise to a little boy. Where precisely, outside, safe from a porch, at a benevolent heart? No one will undoubtedly know it never… And which is this Louise-Cecile? From which does it come? Other questions certainly forever without answer!

The December 26th in the morning it is the roadmender of the village which will declare the birth of the child to the town hall, giving him two first names: Theodore and Christmas… Theodore are the name of one of his sons… Christmas was undoubtedly selected in homage to the day of his birth and it is this second first name which will become its patronym… fault of knowing that of the mother.

December 27th, Theodore has hardly two days when it is deposited in one of the boxes has baby of the old people's home of Aubusson with this short note fixed on his clothing: " The child was born in Saint-Maixant the December 25th 1853 ".

Small Theodore is immediately taken charges some by the personnel with the old people's home, usual of this type of practice at the time.

After some time spent to the orphanage, it is placed in various families of reception and ends up being established with Saint-Yrieix-the-Mountain where as of its more young age it was engaged as shepherd in the farms of the village.

Very quickly attracted by the music it manufactured its first chabrette itself with an aim of rameuter and to gather the ewes in the surrounding grazing grounds and especially to warn the owners of the animals which it was time to return them to the sheep-fold. Bottom of the wood of Maisonniaux in Cloux-Vallereix one heard " Tiédor" to play of the airs on its instrument. Being thus exerted morning and evening he quickly became a musician of reputation in the area.

He then started to animate the balls of Cloux and Saint-Yrieix, making dance the villagers on airs of mazurkas and faggots of which some of its composition. A little eccentric and a sarcastic bit it liked to invent words to make fun of certain not very advisable inhabitants of St-Yrieix or with the sulfurous reputations… Its fame was such as one made him arrange a ballroom in Saint-Yrieix where it could with leisure play of the sometimes slow mazurkas sometimes endiablées for the greatest pleasure of the young people and young people.

The May 19th 1874 it marries in Saint-Yrieix another child of the old people's home, Anne Angélique Sanitas known as " Angele Guillebaud" it will have three children: Annette, Marie and Jean.

The May 19th 1937, Theodore dies out… it is buried a few days later in the cemetery of the village, surrounded by a considerable crowd, leaving orphan the world of the Limousin folklore and the chabrette. And due, some 70 years after its death, the small grannies of Saint-Yrieix still remember, of stars in the eyes, to have danced on airs of " Tiédor" ! Its photo throne still in the town hall and anybody did not forget it…
