History
- Saint-Yorre was in the beginning only the place or were located an isolated vault and a mill, then a priory was mentioned at the 8th century.
- celebrates It thermal spa was launched at the 19th century by the father of the writer Valery Larbaud.
Saint-Yorre, famous for his mineral water, was not always called thus. In the Middle Ages, people of the time pronounced Saint-Thierry, Saint-Tiure, Saint-Thiaure, Saint-Yorre even Saint Georges.
The parish of Saint-Yorre (the communes did not exist yet) seems to be born of a mill with the locality “Villa Mill”, at the time Roman. The existence of an important mill in this area of Limagne is not surprising, because of the fertility of this valley which was to produce corn.
With the Villa Mill, a vault close to the Guerrier source was initially set up. It is there that then a priory of Benedictines was built depending on the Abbey of Cusset. It will be entirely destroyed by a rising Allier in 1739.
Saint-Yorre depended at the time of the canton of Busset.
In 1793, during the revolution, Saint-Yorre counted 233 inhabitants, whereas Busset counted some: 1442 and the whole of the canton of Busset: 4675. To this canton in addition to Saint-Yorre already quoted were attached the following communes: Smart alec, Arronnes, the Vault and Soft.
Before the Revolution, the parish of Saint-Yorre depended on the powerful lord of Busset and was attached to the châtellenie of Vichy.
The population of Saint-Yorre, primarily made up of farmers, stockbreeders, vine growers and plowmen, will remain rather stable during several centuries, between 200 and 350 inhabitants.
It is only as from 1880, with the industrialization of the mineral springs and arrival of the railroad which the population of Saint-Yorre increases appreciably (1886: 734 hab., 1901: 980 hab., 1926: : 1657 hab., today: : 2897 inhabitants).
It is indeed into 1853 that Nicolas Larbaud, owner of a marshy ground with Saint-Yorre from which left a salt water appreciated the bovines, discovers mineral water. The congestion then will start in artisanal form. About 1900, approximately 10 million bottles will be produced.
In 1926, one counts in Saint-Yorre 16 establishments exploiting 72 sources on the territory of the commune, for which it is advisable to add 12 other houses proceeding to the setting in bottles of 32 sources located on the left bank Allier, on the communes of Saint-Sylvestre-Pragoulin, Saint-Priest-Bramefant, of Hauterive. It is only into 1936 that created for itself the mineral water Business firm of the Basin of Vichy.
Today, the annual production turns around 200 million bottles.
Parallel to the production of mineral water, another industry essential to the congestion is born, at the end of last century and at the beginning of this one; production of the bottles of glasses.
Thus was born the glassmaking from Saint-Yorre about years 1898/1901. Until 1914, one will produce primarily bottles. In 1914, with the war, the glassmaking will be requisitioned by the steel-works of Firminy for the manufacture of steel ingots intended for the needs for the army.
- In 1928, will begin the production of the insulators for 7 months of the year, the three other months being reserved for the bottles.
- In 1936, will begin the production from the bottles.
- In 1947, the first tempered glass insulator will be born.
Saint-Yorre knows a true economic and industrial richness nowadays. Indeed, of many companies were established and contributed their share to the development of the commune, like the Hepatoum Company, which manufactures medicinal products containing the water of Saint-Yorre and the Granger-Bouguet-Pau Company, manufacturer of syrups and dyes food. Many tradesmen and craftsmen could settle and see thriving their business. Many constructions as well individual as collective were born.
To allow the establishment of new companies and to face the employment problems, the common one makes significant efforts. Thus it accommodated the Comalait factory on the industrial park and that it created a new zone of activities where was established Wallon printing works, and the workshop Lombart and Libault.
