Saint-Vith
Saint-Vith officially in German Sankt Vith is a city of the German-speaking Communauté of Belgium and constitutes one of the 9 communes of German language belonging to the Walloon region.
The following villages and hamlets belong to the commune: Alfersteg, Amelscheid, Andler, Atzerath, Breitfeld, Crombach, Eiterbach, Galhausen, Heuem, Hinderhausen, Hunnange ( Hünningen ), Lommersweiler, Neidingen, Neubrück, Neundorf, Niederemmels, Oberemmels, Recht, Rödgen, Rodt, Schlierbach, Schoenberg ( Schoenberg ), Setz, Steinebrück, Wallerode and Weppeler.
History
Saint-Vith was an important place on the market of the area at the 12th century and acquired a communal charter in 1350. The city burned into 1543,1602, and 1689. Originally in the the Prussian Rhineland, the city was rédimée with the remainder of the Cantons of the East in Belgium by the Traité of Versailles on March 6th, 1925 like repairs with the war damagees after the First World War.Important repair and marshalling yard of the railroads, Saint-Vith was a strategic point during the Bataille of the Ardennes. Defended by the US Army during several days at the time of the German counter-attack, it was taken again all the same by the German army after an American retirement. The Allies then bombarded intensively the city the December 25th and 26th 1944 which was destroyed to 95%. The Büchel tower is today the only vestige of pre-war period which remains there in the center of the city.
