Saint-Souplet

Saint-Souplet is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Geography

Saint Souplet-Escaufourt is located on the secondary road 115. It belongs to the Canton of Cateau-Cambrésis, to 6 km of Cateau, 30 km in the south-east of Cambrai and 86 km of Lille.

Located at the south of the Cateau-Cambrésis and the threshold of the Avesnois, the village of Saint-Souplet is surrounded by the natural landscapes of the Hainaut: meadows bordered of hedges of the woodlands and vast extended of cultivated fields. It extends along the Selle, Rivière which takes its source in the Aisne and curves on nearly 50 kilometers in the Département of North. Many species of Arbre S are present on its banks, which dominates the church of bricks of the village.

History

Saint-Souplet owes his name with its owner holy Sulpice the Piles archbishop of Bourges at the 8th century of which it is only one corruption. It is not the only name which it carried if one believes the chronicler cambrésien Balderies of it: after its torment in 670, Holy-Maxellende was buried in the church of the locality which was called then Sulpitus Bomeriole. The name Saint Souplet prevails definitively as of the 12th century or let us see we it carried by a famous family originating in Souplet Saint and to which belonged Guillaume Seigneur of Souplet Saint in 1151.

Saint Souplet had his importance at the beginning of the history of France. It made the limit of the Country of the Nerviens famous for their fights with the Roman armies. A Gallic roadway the cross-piece in all its extent, skirting the river the Saddle until the sources of the Oise. At the 8th century, Charlemagne assure him its immunities and its privileges. Saint Souplet had his castles with the Moyen-âge, including two strong Châteaux which was besieged, taken and was destroyed by Louis XIII in war with the Spain. There does not remain any trace about it.

In 1272, Enguerrand de Coucy sold the Seigneurie with Marguerite II Comtesse of Flanders.

In 1283, Guillaume II Count de Flandre in fact homage to the Cambric Bishop.

In 1336, Philippe de Valois King de France the achète.
To the treaty of Conflans the October 5th 1465, Louis XI yielded it to Charles Count de Charolais with the cities of the Somme.

After its return to the kingdom Louis XII gave it to the Lord of Grüthuse.

In 1789, it belonged to the marquis de Wargnies of the family of Anneux.

Saint Souplet formed part as of January 1943 famous maquis of Mazinghien, group very organized of 300 resistant, which since ten communes bordering on North and Aisne led the hard life to the enemy until the Libération. Many brilliant deeds are with their credit.

In 1973, it absorbs Escaufourt, located before in the Aisne

Personalities related to the commune

ESCAUFOURT was marked by its teachers, secretaries of town hall. First of all Mr RAIMBAUT, then Mr Amédée BELLOWS (1920-1981) which remained, like his wife, of 1945 to 1967 in this small commune of Aisne.
