Saint-Renan
Saint Renan ( Breton Lokournan in ) is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France, located at about fifteen kilometers in the North-West of Brest.
History
Saint Renan holds his name of a hermit Irish, Saint Ronan come évangéliser the area at the 5th century. Whereas Brest is yet only one small village, the town of Renan Saint will develop throughout the Moyen-âge.In 1276 the duke of Brittany established there a court of justice under the denomination of Ducal Bar of Saint-Renan and Brest.
After the fastening of Brittany in France, Saint-Renan becomes a chief town of seneschalsy, whose civil and military administration, which is ensured by a seneshal, extends on 37 surrounding parishes.
In 1681, Louis XIV transfers the court of justice to Brest, which involves an economic regression of the city.
During years 1960, thanks to the discovery of important ore layers in the marshes which border the river Ildut, Saint-Renan becomes the European Capitale of Tin . The holes dug for the exploitation of tin will be then filled by water of the river, creating five lakes: Comiren (of the name of the Mining Company of Renan Saint), Tréoualen, Lannéon, Poulinoc and Ty Colo.

Tourism
Except the old houses of 15th and 16th centuries located on the place of the old market, the city offers few historical and architectural attractions.By the construction of many allotments, the city doubled its population in forty years. It is a " commune today; perished-urbaine" from Brest. This rural and commercial small town became in a few decades a suburban commune. By its geographical location (at 20 minutes of center town of Brest/1/4 of hour of the beaches) like its public equipment (school, sporting and administrative) and commercial, it attracts many credits working on Brest.
Its market of Saturday, is certainly most important of the area, but is not enough to fix the visitor. Saint-Renan is more a crossing point that a place of residence for the tourist. The water levels of the commune represent a considerable potential but are to date slightly exploited for tourism and the leisures.
Events
- Every year is held a great medieval festival there. Each summer, the historical center of Saint-Renan avoids splendid streamers and other escutcheons in order to accommodate the great medieval festival and its 30.000 spectators. Up to 2007, this great festival was organized for the 10th consecutive year. In 2008, this demonstration will not take place and will proceed every two years. The 11th edition will take place in 2009.
