Saint-Pompont (also written Saint-Pompom ; occitan: Sent Plemponh ) is a common French, located in the department of the the Dordogne and the area Aquitaine.

History

The origin of the name is related to the first name " Pomponius" , bishop of Naples to the VI° century.

Of prehistory…

Vestiges magdaléniens were discovered in the caves (private) located under the castle of Castelviel dominating the valley of the Bilge channel.

Of Gallic and the Romans…

At the time Gallic, the commune belonged to the territory of Pétroccoriens. A tumulus with the locality " Fondela" and some other archeological sites testify some. At the time of the Roman conquest, Saint Pompom becomes a crossing point connecting Cahors to Périgueux. This Roman way known as " way of the anglais" located on the slopes limestones was damaged by natural gullyings. The presence of a retaining wall built with enormous blocks of limestone and of a station of guet overhanging the borough are the last vestiges which one can see.

From XIV° century…

With the XIV° century, the One hundred Year old war involved the fortification of the borough thanks to the English. Today, it remains of these last a door covered with machicolation. The current castle dating from the XV° century preserved its gross tower and a covered way still quite visible. More in the West, on a hill dominating a narrow small valley where and Mandalou curved is formed, the castle of Mespoulet (private) is described as noble den (XVIII° century). Just like the villages of the Valley of Céou, Saint Pompom underwent full whip the wars of religion, more especially as the royal road crossed the locality.

With the doors of the XXI° century….

Saint Pompon is a small rural district full with life, located a little at the variation of the tourist main roads of the valleys of the Dordogne and Céou. This borough border proves its dynamism by its vain installation, its trade, its social and tourist reception facilities. It is a call to the dawdling which this maze of lanes where one discovers around the church and of the castle, of the rich houses of a great architectural diversity. On the ways of yesterday and today, the walker can contemplate the noble hamlets and houses while its glance can be lost towards horizons of widest.
