History
The registers numbers did not always exist, there is thus impossible to precisely know the age of the city. Of aucuns think that it was put at the world by the Gaulois, because of a gallery which was along the Château, on the side of the city, and which this architecture in galleries is of Gallic style; in addition to that, by Romans, because during the wars in Morinie, or during about the 500 years that they remained in the Gaulle subjected to their domination, they could found the Forteresse for themselves, which one would be carried to believe, because of ways which leads to it (with being known, the way of Thérouanne, that of the 7 ways in Bolted, which could arrive opposite the Sénéchaussée and that of Arras which could, him, to enter by the door of the old castle, in the East).
At all events, it is possible that the Morins and the Atrébates, as the remainder of the people of Gaulle, needing to prepare a refuge in the event of alarm, placed forts on the heights and in the vicinity of the Rivière S. the castle thus emerges above the small river Lhena or Terna, later Thernois, Ternois and finally Ternoise. There the houses did not have to be long in arriving, once arrived to him, clean and born to protect.
When César attacked Morins, that it had well sorrow to subject, we were thus face, then, whether we had a beautiful castle or the poor huts. The Romans sent the cavalry of their armies of Gaules to remake themselves in this country; and of the writers found from there etymology of Tervane or Terrane, name which it carried a long time as well as the city. This name say, was made of that which the Romans gave to all this country Terra avenae , Ground of oats. It is enough to a small syncope to do that of Tervana of it. Besides we will see a count de Tervane Saint-pol. adding to its name of Hugues that of Campdavaine or oats field, and taking for Armoiries a sheaf of gold in field of azure. As one said the Tervanois country, it is not astonishing that soon, by the speed of the pronunciation, one said Ternois while speaking about the country and the river, this name remained a long time, one said: the county of ternois.
Authors confused, because of the resemblance of the names, our town of Tervana-Saint-pol., with Tervanna- Thérouanne, capital of Morins. It is because of U which replaced V a long time: Tervana, which one wrote initially Terüana and not Terüanna, Thérouanne with two NR. Marianus Scottus, which wrote about the middle of the 11th century, known as that Clodion overcame the Romans about the year 438, and seized Tervaniens and Morins. It distinguishes the two people well thus.
This name of Tervana was changed into that of Saint-pol., and here how: The Danes having come to make an incursion at the neighbouring ones, reflect very with fire and blood, null fortress, null thatched cottage was not saved. After the storm, when the flood devastator had been withdrawn, driven back by the counts de Boulogne and of Flanders, and especially by the king of France Raoul of Burgundy, one lives in the middle of this ruined region, the small town to smile peaceful and very radiant of peace. That occurred in 881, at the time of Louis and Carloman, one year after the Incendie of Arras by the Norman ones. A miraculous cloud undoubtedly had wrapped it, charming virgin, and the enemy had crossed it without seeing it. Our aïeux goods were not satisfied to recognize by neuvaines the protection of the saint Apôtre, under the patronage of which they had already placed their city; they wanted to name it name of their saint. Later, the orthography was corrupted; and Saint-pol. was made. The inhabitants still have the same saint for owner.
One can arrive at this manner of writing, by remembering that the Spaniards having held the city some time, called it in their language, San-Paolo, from where Saint-pol., by the cutting off of has; the O of the termination disappeared in the French pronunciation.
The conservation of a city alone, remained upright in the middle of the bag of all the others and the devastation of all the region which surrounds it, was noticed by the chroniclers. " It, said Lambert of Ardres there, a borough and its castle called Tervana, located close to the river Téna or Terna, commander with all the territory which extended even beyond Canche… This borough had the name of Tervana, before 900 of J-C… This name was changed into that of St-Paul, because, at the time of an incursion of the Danes in 881, this borough and its castle tested the protection of Saint Paul. Pauli Fanum (the temple of Paul saint) only, is not counted among the places which were rebuilt; it is that it had not been destroyed. The name of Tervaniens was changed into that of Saint-Polois."
After all, free with us to believe that the inhabitants, attacked like the others, united courage with the prayers, and that dévotement persuaded that their prayers alone had saved them, they testified some, as they could it, their recognition with the saint.
Tervane or Saint-pol. and the country of Tervane, Ternavien country, and finally country of Ternois, was set up in county towards 543. A count of Boulogne named Roulphe or Rodolphe, wire of Aimeric, him even wire of Light or Leodgard (1st count de Boulogne into 511) then gave in dowry this region to his daughter. This Roulphe, in addition to his/her daughter married to Leodegond, had a son named Robert or Robrès, who seized the Flanders, the country of Norman, and gave, it should be said in passing, with his/her daughter, marries of a count de Vermandois, which it called the county of Hesdin.
