Geography
Commune of the Valley of the Evre, which skirts it on all its Western circumference, Saint-Pierre-Montlimart is also bordered in the East by a boxed river, the Charruau, affluent of Evre.Crossing by two roads of regional interest, the RD 17 connecting Saint-Laurent-of-Furnace bridges (and thus Ancenis and the highway Nantes - Paris) to the Chalonnes-on-Loire and the RD 752 connecting Varades to Cholet while passing by Beaupréau, the common one has a strategic position in the triangle Angers - Cholet - Nantes. The borough is distant of 48 km Angers, of 27 km Cholet and 48 km Nantes.
The commune of Saint-Pierre-Montlimart, of a surface of 2.229 hectares, is located at the West of the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the middle of the Country of Mauges (6 cantons - approximately 100.000 Hab). It belongs to the Canton of Montrevault.
History
2000 years before J.C., a village is founded with the site of current the Small-Montrevault ; it is already the presence of a gold seam which caused this installation. “the Hillock of the Rock” , which could be a tumulus, date of this same time.In 57 before J.C., the Romans arrive at Saint-Pierre and exploit the iron ore there. Saint-Pierre bears the name of Meldacus then; it will become the capital of Mauges towards the end of the 4th century.
The Roman domination being completed, the country of gold will become a very coveted area, bloody fights will burst. In the year 943, a peace treaty is signed; Maulimart starts to build.
At the end of the 10th century, one builds the Château of Small-Montrevault the and the village is included in its fortifications.
It is in 1030 that the church of Maulimart will be built; its entry was in the west; at this same time, “houses of the canons” , origin of the modern agglomeration (“Priory”, “Compassion”, “Midsummer's Day”…) was built.
In 1515 - 1516 was built the bell-tower of the current church. The wars of religion go again ensanglanter Mauges, destroying in 1569 the Château of Small-Montrevault the .
Saint-Pierre will take an active part in the Guerres of the Vendée; in 1793, the church will be completely burned, only some sections of wall still testify to old times.
