Saint-Philippe (the Meeting)

Located in the south-east of the department and the area of the Meeting, Saint-Philippe is a common French.

Its inhabitants is called Saint-Philippois.

Its currency is: “ Saint-Philippe, natural destination with the foot of the volcano ”.

Geography

Saint-Philippe is on the south-eastern point of the island. Its communal territory is bordering on those of Saint-Joseph and Holy-Rose, respectively in the west and north.

Even if the commune has an important frontage Littoral E where the population concentrates, the whole of the managed territory is part from now on of the High such as they were redefined by decree the December 26th 1994. This classification aims to make profit with the commune (with the variation of the decision-making centres of the island) from the program from correction which the mountainous areas by this skew enjoy.

History

The common one was created in 1830.

Its history is in particular marked by the failure of a British boat containing 1.262 men on board in Tremblet in middle of the night in 1897, the Warren Hastings . Had with a failure of the magnetic compass perhaps caused by the eruption close to the Piton of the Furnace, the shipwreck makes two dead, the remainder of the crew having waited the morning to try to leave the wreck.

The ship had on its board the electricity until the village of Tremblet had to wait until in 1984.

Administration

Saint-Philippe is the only commune of the island not to belong to an inter-commune unit. It left CIVIS the December 26th 2002.

Infrastructures

One finds on the communal territory a public college, the college Bory of Saint-Vincent. There is no college.

Economy

The commune organizes each year in August a Fête around the Vacoa and of the Palmiste.
