History

The origin of the name of the village comes from Pargoire, rich lord Corsican who were martyrisé with Parthian, Parthénée and Severin, his slaves, at one dubious time. Their remainders were transported in Noli, meadows of Soaps, in the old state of Genoa, where the cathedral their is dedicated. One represents usually holy Pargoire assembled on a horse surrounded by his companions. In order to supplement this brief history it is important to specify that excavations and the research carried out on the commune indicate that populations were present at St Pargoire 3000 years before J.C.Plusieurs menhirs and dolmens testify to their presence; in holding of Peyreficade between St Marcel and D2 it there had “menhir of St Pargoire” which was a drawn up stone of 3m top, which was destroyed in the Thirties, in 1976 one deducted in the department of Herault more than 130 menhirs. The abbots of St Guilhem the Desert (Gellone) are the first lords of St Pargoire which one knows. They undoubtedly succeeded the warlike lords who had been appointed with the guard of Septimanie; but when this one was entirely subjected, the country called Miliacus (from where the name Tops of Miliac) taken the name of St Pargoire, Corsican martyr to which the imposing church was dedicated.

Geology/Vegetation

On the commune of St.Pargoire, there are three types of different grounds:
  • argilo-limestone, cultivable, good ground for the vine and cereals.
  • the grounds compact, noncultivable, but good limestones for the breeding of the sheep (in clear regression).
  • the muddy or stony edges of the Herault which represent the 1/20e surface of the commune.

The near total of the vegetation which surrounds St.Pargoire is vine. The remainder is Garrigue with, with the foot of the holm oaks, some truffle.
