History

Origins of Saint-Offenge, few things are known: it is thus necessary to seek how the commune falls under the history of the Wallows. The circumferences of the solid mass but also the heart of the Wallows delivered traces of human occupation as of the age of Iron, then at the time Gallo-Roman, finally during the Early middle ages: structures of habitat with mosaic to the Mound in Wallows, elements of Saint François amphoras and aqueduct the Dirty ones, burials, currencies, weapons. Thus, at Saint Offenge-Dessous were updated of the tombs under tiles containing a vase and currencies, gone back to 250 to 600 after Jesus-Christ.

At the end of XIIIème century, the area, the “Albanian country”, which is then famous to be the attic of Savoy, is the stake of a competition baited between two States: the County of Savoy and the County of Geneva. From Annecy to Chautagne, the undecided border ran of the Wallows to the Rhone, defended by a series of castles and thestrong ones, in Viuz, Gruffy, Cusy, Saint-Offenge-Top (Loëx), Grésy, Saint-Innocent, Sallières, Cessens, Biolle. With the liking of their fights or their bringings together, Savoy and Geneva dispute these places which change owners, which makes their history complex.

But the emigration, the consequences of the First World War then, after 1945, the decline of the dairy breeding are at the origin of the demographic fall. For thirty years on the other hand, the commune, like the common neighbors, has made great strides related to the periurbanisation because of proximity of basins of active employment, Chambéry, Aix-the-Baths, Rumilly, Annecy.

Places and monuments

The church of the commune rebuilt starting from 1849 in the style néo-Sardinian, running then in Wallows and in Faucigny, sheltered a wood pietà carved and painted beginning of the 16th century. This pietà comes from a retable of the old church of Antonins in Chambéry; the giver is the count of Clermont-Mount-Saint-Jean. Today, she was entrusted to a museum.

Every year since about thirty years, the two communes of Saint-Offenge-Below and Saint-Offenge-Tops organize the third weekend of July the " Celebrates of Gruyère": in addition to the Emmenthaler cheese contest in which the many fruit-bearing ones of the area take part, Sunday is also marked by folk spectacles which associate the local group " Lou Cabro" with groups come from the whole world.
