Saint-Nicolas-of-Port

Saint-Nicolas-of-Port is a common French, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the area Lorraine. At one time Saint Nicolas's Day because of its splendid Basilica, it took its current name the April 2nd 1961. Its inhabitants are the Portois .

The commune is located on left bank of the Meurthe vis-a-vis Varangéville. By the D400 secondary road, it is to 13 km of Nancy and 18 km of Lunéville, but the highway A33 accommodates the principal flow of circulation.

History

At the time Gallo-Roman, it was called simply Port , until the construction of a first church in 1093, intended to receive a relic of the bishop of Myre in Turkey Saint Nicolas. Later, in 1193, one second will be built. It is in this church that will come to request Jeanne d' Arc in 1429. The current basilica will be built to achieve the wish of the duke Rene II at the time the battle of Nancy (January 5th, 1477) by Simon Moycet in 1481 (devoted in 1560).

The city was entirely ransacked and burned by the Swedish the .elle November 5th 1635 was égaelement victim of severe bombardment in 1940.

The Channel of the Marne in the Rhine, built about the middle of the 19th century, skirts the city.

It was restored starting from 1983 thanks to the considerable legacy of Mrs. Camille Croué-Friedman, an American rich person originating in this city. Lastly, it shelters a relic of Saint Nicolas's Day, its phalange " dextral bénissante".
