History
Antiquity
The area is inhabited since the most moved back times, as the presence of several vestiges proves it, like the Tumulus de Dissignac, or the Dolmen (which is located into full in the middle of the city). Vestiges Neolithic S and bronziers were found, in the handle of the City-Halluard. The village is then on the grounds in edges of the Loire. See also: Dolmen of the Three Stones Saint Nazaire belonged to the Armorican Gallic city of the Namnètes, then the town of Corbilo became a Gallo-Roman port
The Middle Ages
According to the chronicler Alain Bouchart (15th), making mention of the legendary origins of Breton, it is towards Saint-Nazaire that Brutus moved, the mythical ancestor of Breton, to take foot on its new fatherland. At the end of the Roman Empire, the Breton ones of On the other side of the channel (province of Brittany) colonized the Loire, then little by little the peninsula guérandaise. The maximum extension of the Breton language on the Loire is a little in the east of Saint-Nazaire (Donges, celebrates oil refinery today). At the 6th century, a text of Gregoire de Tours mentions Basilique sheltering the relics of the martyr Nazarius. In this basilica, a gold cross-belt in offering was exposed. It would have caused the covetousness of the Breton chief Waroc' H II, who made send an emissary to seize some. This one crashed to pieces cranium on the lintel of the door. By this miracle, Waroc' H, frightened, filled the church gifts. The village took the name of Sanctus Nazarius de Sinuario . The history of Saint-Nazaire is then more discrete. She knew confrontations, like that of 1380, where Jehan d' Ust defended the city in the name of the duke Jean IV against the fleet Castilian, at the time of the Guerre One hundred Year old. The borough was the chief town of a parish which went from Penhoët to Pornichet, seat of a seigniory, the Viscount of Saint-Nazaire. Saint-Nazaire formed part, like the whole of Brittany, the Breton kingdom, then Duché of Brittany until in 1532, year of annexation in France. In 1624, the city was threatened by the Calvinistes. In 1756, a fort was built on the order of the Duc of Pivot to protect the littoral. The borough counted 600 inhabitants then. Until the French revolution, Saint-Nazaire belonged to the province of Brittany.
Industrialization
At the beginning of the 19th century, the port is yet only a hâvre. Contrary to what is marked a little everywhere today, the economy is not based on the fishing, but Saint-Nazaire is a wearing of pilots (pilot which guides the merchant ships in the estuary). Before the creation of modern Saint-Nazaire by Napoleon I {{er}}, the parish of Saint-Nazaire counts only 3216 inhabitants. This modern Saint-Nazaire was created like a port advanced on the the Loire, benefitting from truces in the wars which prevented until there its evolution. The population of Saint-Nazaire knew an exponential growth then, which was worth to him the nickname of “small Breton California”, the contribution of population was mainly local (Brière), of Low-Brittany (of Morbihan in southern Finistere), and minoritairement of other French areas. In 1802, one decides to build a roadway on Portereau, a Phare, a mole, basins and holds of constructions. The mole, after a long delay, was built 1828 with 1835. The city is built on the current site of the district of Small Morocco. Saint Nazaire, was a small port for a long time then the terminus of the ferry vapor which made the Nantes-Saint-Nazaire line. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Ship S of large tonnage which cannot more go up until Nantes, one made a port of substitution of it. In 1856, the first basin is dug by the fill of the handle of the Ville Halluard . This wet dock made it possible the ships to moor and make half-turn. In 1857, the Company of the railroads of Orleans connects Saint-Nazaire to Nantes. In 1862, installation of the transatlantic postal lines towards the Central America and opening of the first shipyards ammorçant the indutrialisation of the city (Building site Scott). It is the first Shipyard French with launching modern ships with metal hulls. In 1866, the Scott building site goes bankrupt. In 1881, the inauguration of the second basin, that of Penhoët, allows the stopover of a number of more important ships. A lock of access is also built. Old St Nazaire, is thus cut by this lock, thus creating an artificial island called small Morocco . Saint-Nazaire then will know an episode founder of its identity of Red Ville : the Strike of the Forging mills of Trignac in 1884 (located at the time on the commune of Mounting block-of-Brittany, now common of Trignac), which knows a national repercussion. It starts in opposition to a reduction of manpower in the workshops of Puddlage. At once, on March 30th, the workmen put in strike at one crushing majority. The strike, not so serious, seems to be short. But it makes following other events (the Fusillade of Fourmies). The Socialists flow, defend the stopped strikers, organize an important media din. The strike is used to them as speaking pipe to the national plan. It is a show of force, which however will bring neither generalization of the conflict nor social progress. In 1900, is created the commune of Pornichet by dismemberment of Saint-Nazaire.
First World War.
The city was an important port of unloading of the allied troops. Those, in particular the American troops made many installations in the area. They dug in particular several pond S in order to create drinking water reserves. In 1917, the Americans build the refrigerating terminal.
Between two wars
the aeronautical engineering makes its appearance in 1922 on the site of the shipyards which, to diversify their production, build seaplanes. In 1936, the company is nationalized, and the military programs ensure the development of the activity. Construction of the form locks Joubert between 1931 and 1932. In 1932, the casino of Saint-Nazaire goes bankrupt and is resold with évêché of Nantes. In 1935, Construction of the first part of the current Saint-Louis school in the place of the casino. In June 1936, the general strike largely affects the city, the shipyards are paralyzed.
Second world war
Saint-Nazaire was the last big city released of Europe. In 1940, with the conquest Nazi, the unloading dock of the transatlantic general Compagnie on the wet dock is destroyed and of enormous bunkers by the Organization Todt to create a base of underwater German are built. The coast, it, is occupied many Blockhaus constituting part of the Atlantic Wall. Because of its strategic importance the place is well kept. And is subjected to important bombardments. In 1943, the town of Saint-Nazaire is evacuated.
