History

The origins of the city go up with vestiges of Roman camps. This shows as of its creation the vocation Militaire of the commune. Indeed it will include/understand important camps and military industries throughout its history.

Located at the borders of the Medoc and the Moors, of many brooks curve between the fields of this area. These Brook X called Jalle S, will give its name to the Commune. They contributed to the establishment of Moulin S using their driving force to function. In 1660, Jehan Duperier buys in Henri de Montaigne (of the family of Michel de Montaigne) a ground in order to build 6  there; Mill S with Powder at the edge of the Jalle. He dies a few years later in the explosion of one of his mills while having posed the bases of the Poudrerie national Royale then which very quickly became an establishment of first importance in the production of the powder for the Armies.

These activities and the fact that the Powder mill employed many workmen led the population to be fixed around the factory, thus constituting the districts of Saint M3edard's Day: the Borough, Gajac, Corbiac, Magudas, Caupian, Hastignan, Issac, Berlincan and Cérillan.

December 14th 1789, the French revolution recognizes the importance of this settlement while creating, by a Décret of the constituent Assembly, the commune of Saint-Medard-in-Jalles. The commune then takes for limits those of the Paroisse of Medard Saint.

The importance of the Industrie of the Powder will be worth to him during a few years to be called Fulminant-on-Jalles but takes again its current name in 1793 to keep it until our days.

Saint-Medard-in-Jalles is in the center of the industry of the nuclear Missile S, accommodating three of the four establishments of Gironde directly concerned: the CAEPE, SNPE and EADS-ST (Solid Snecma Propulsion being in Haillan, some hundred meters only).
