The commune shelters a central Maison (prison for condemned to longsufferings) known as power station of Saint-Maur. The building site began in 1969 and was completed in 1973. Envisaged in the beginning to shelter 450 prisoners it accommodates nothing any more but approximately 300 prisoners of which thirds of condemned to pepetuity. Jean-Charles Willoquet, Carlos, François Besse and Patrick Henry remained there. Alain Souchon quotes this place in the refrain of the one of its songs " Cadors" album " Nickel" (1990).

Personalities related to the commune

Octave Monjoin , a Hairy of the Great War 14-18. It was called " the unknown soldier vivant" by the press of the time. Amnesic, it was interned during many years, his identity not being known. He proved, after an investigation of more than twenty years and many lawsuits (several families recognized in him a relative lost with the combat), being a child of Saint-Maur. He will have recognized the church and some houses at the time of his official visit of recognition in the village. The commune paid homage as a war veteran to him and it is buried in the communal cemetery. On its tomb stone, only the date of its death appears, as if it had never been born and had never lived. A film of Joel Calmettes tells his history where its role is held by the actor Pierre Fresnay. The film is in particular based on the book of Jean-Yves Naour, the alive Unknown soldier (Hachette editions).
