Saint-Mathieu-of-Rioux

Saint-Mathieu-with-Rioux is a Municipalité of parish in the regional Municipalité of county of the Basques, with the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent at a score of kilometers at the east of Three-Spray.

The first inhabitants of the places, a band of Intrigues, had been installed on a ground point advancing in water of the lake Saint-Mathieu. The place was known under names of Point to the Cross or Cemetery of the Savages. The first White, a called Michel Jean of Saint-Jean-Port-Pretty, settles in these places about 1850. During three years, it will go to Three-Spray to sell samples of its harvest, thus making it possible several colonists to realize that it was possible to live at this place. The movement of colonization will start then truly. In 1858, one attends the canonical erection of the parish of Saint-Mathieu-of-Rioux which will transmit its name to the municipality of parish created in 1865.

It will be noted that the form appearing in the official Gazette, Saint-Matthieu-of-Rioux, comprises the usual orthography of Matthieu, the evangelist whose patronym was retained because the parish had detached from that of Saint-Simon, dedicated to another apostle of Christ. As for the component Rioux or Riou, it marks the inclusion of the parish in the Nicolas-Rioux seigniory which bears the name of its first dealer.

In addition to the center of ski of the mount Saint-Mathieu, attended beach of the lake Saint-Mathieu, the local economy rests on the exploitation of érablières and, since 1975, on the marketing of the charcoal. In the past, agriculture constituted the main resource, whereas the wooded ones of farm ensured an auxiliary income. Coupled with the industry of sawing, the manufacture of wood butter boxes was evoked a long time like the brand image of Saint-Mathieu. In 1906-1907, more than 11.000 were assembled there with the hand! The arrival of the boxes of paperboard on the market of butter in 1962 was to sign the death warrant of this flourishing industry.
