Saint-Martin-the-Garenne

Saint-Martin-the-Garenne is a common French, located in the department of the Yvelines and the area Île-de-France. It belongs to the Regional natural park of French Vexin.
The inhabitants are called Saint-Martinois .
The name of the commune is dedicated to saint Martin, “wild rabbit” indicates a moor (derivative of medieval Latin warenna ).
Geography
Saint-Martin-the-Garenne, commune of the French Vexin, is located in a loop of the the Mantes-the-Pretty Seine at eight kilometers at the North-West of , with the limit of the Val-d'Oise.The communes bordering are Vétheuil (Val-d'Oise) in north, Follainville-Dennemont in south-west, Guernes in the south, Méricourt and the Mousseaux-on-Seine in the west, Moisson in the North-West, these three last communes being located on other bank of the Seine.
The communal territory is established in a convexity of the Seine and is divided between a part raised, approximately 150 meters of altitude on the edge of the plate of Vexin, and another part, towards the west, vaster consisted the alluvial plain of the river, light inclined towards the west between 50 and 20 meters of altitude. It is a primarily rural territory (to 95%), wooded for approximately half of its surface. It includes/understands most of the Saint Martin's day island located in the north of the commune. In the west, in edge of the Seine great stretches of water are corresponding to old sand pits.
The habitat is distributed between the village, installed with the foot of the slope is, and the hamlet of Sandrancourt which is more in the west in edge of the Seine, to approximately three kilometers of the village.
The commune is served by the secondary road D 147 connecting Mantes-the-Pretty to Vétheuil.
It is crossed in its north-eastern part by a Sentier of great excursion, the GR. 2.
History
The blazon takes again the weapons of the family of the Worm, former lords of Saint-Martin-the-Garenne, visible on a tomb stone located in the church of the village.-
Site inhabited as of prehistory until the time mérovingienne.
- the village depended on the abbey of the Nozzle-Hellouin as from the 11th century, then was a seigniory attached to the lord of the Rock-Guyon before being set up in commune with the Révolution.

- Saint Martin's day Church: out of stone of size, of Romance style, dating from XIIe century, it was strongly restored in 1873. The bell-tower, crowned of an arrow with eight sides covered with slates, is composed of a square tower on two floors surmounted by an octagonal stage with eight openings in semicircular arch.

Economy
- Sand pits exploited by the Company of the sand pits of the Seine (CS, group Lafarge). The site, which extends on 300 ha, produces 800.000 T of evacuated sand by inland waterway.
It is the site of Sandrancourt which provides each year the 2000 tons of sand of the operation Paris-Beach. Transport is ensured by inland waterway by means of four barges. This sand, selected for its smoothness (average diameter 0,1 mm) is offered to the commune of Paris by Lafarge which looks after its environmental image thus.

Nature
Located in the Regional Park of French Vexin, Saint Martin is bordered in north, the south by the Forest of Chesnay. Dominating the village, a hillock called " glaisières" , an astonishing microphone-environment presents to the Mediterranean paces (pines, thorn-bush…), due to its loamy ground. The slopes of the Seine, in edge of wood, are rich in fauna and flora. One can observe there, at dawn or in end-of-day, of the deer tribe.Towards Sandrancourt, the part of the site of the sand pits whose exploitation is finished is gradually given in value. The choice was made on 80 ha plant it in natural timbering, meadow and moors after having restored the topsoil removed in the beginning.
On a space of 1,5 ha a botanical collection was made up; it reconstitutes 15 different mediums, of which wetlands. This site is closed with the public.
