Saint Martin's day - Var is a common French, located in the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is the Saint-Martinois .
Geography
The commune extends on the grounds gained on the Var by the Endiguement realized in the middle of the XIXe century and on the hills from the old soil of Rocket-Saint Martin, and covers 559 ha. It is located near the RD 6202, way which begins in the alpine solid mass a few kilometers more in north by borrowing deep throats, to 20 km of Nice.
History
The commune was born in 1867 from the dismemberment from the commune of Rocket-Saint Martin. The name of Martin Saint is that of a villa of the Abbaye of Pons Saint of founded Nice at the time Carolingienne.Some historical facts:
Great risings
Great risings of the VAr of the years 1750 which carried the hectares of gardens gained on the river during the centuries, the parish church and some houses. The church will be rebuilt a little higher, in the east of the village.
Battle of Gillette
The battle of Gillette in September 1793 which symbolizes the stop of the retreats of the revolutionary armies vis-a-vis the countries united against France. The marshal De Wins, ordering the Piedmontese troops and niçoises, does not manage to take the strengthened village of Gillette defended well by the general Dugommier. The battle, in several combat, because several hundreds of killed. The episode was represented by the Roehn painter and figure in the Gallery of the battles with Versailles. Saint Martin's day played a basic part postpones for the French in its engagements. The gueyeurs of the place facilitated the passage of the VAr for the men of Dugommier. Separation of the two villages
Separation in 1867, after long and difficult procedure, of the two villages of the commune of Rocket-Saint Martin. The request for separation was made by a majority of the inhabitants of the Rocket directed by the lawyer Prosper Raybaud, future mayor of the place. The operation divided the soil in two artificially.
Combat of August 1944
- Combat of August 1944 within the framework of the German counter-offensive on Levens. Several resistant is killed between 19 and on August 24th.
