The borough is primarily made up of old constructions. The commune of Saint Martin de Bernegoue is particularized by its linear urbanization along the secondary road 104.The common one belongs to the Niort-Brioux plain which extends from the marsh poitevin to the plate mellois. The plain is, at this place, primarily made up of Jurassic limestones (limestones séquaniens). The communal territory is mainly characterized in the South by a landscape of openfield. In North, the slopes which go down on the " plaine" of Prahecq, are in fact the only tension field marking the landscape. At this place, a screen of the woodlands of a certain width in contrast with the openfield meets locally dominating.
History
The first mentions of Bernegoue would go back to 1244 in the accounts books of Alphonse of Poitiers under the denomination of Bernagoies or Bernegoe. One finds it in 1280 spelled Bernagoy then towards 1475 seigniory of Bernagouhé. In 1555, it names Bernagoue, in 1648, Saint Martin de Bernegoue, in 1782 Holy Marie Madeleine and finally it is in 1800 qu ' it takes the final name of Saint Martin de Bernegoue. The patronym of Bernegoue is perhaps the acronym of " berge" , of Gallic origin, which indicates the edge of a way and " groie" , an argillaceous ground of poor quality strewn with fragments limestones.
As for the patronym of Martin Saint, it comes obviously from the Martin legionary who was born in Pannonia (Hungary) towards 316. It entered the legion at the age de15 years and was named officer in Amiens. It is there, during winter 354, that Martin cut his coat with his sword to give half of it to poor. The following night, he saw Christ appearing in dream. He asked the baptism then. In 356 it goes at Hillaire, the bishop of Poitiers, and it is in 371 qu ' it became bishop of the town of Turns where it dies into 397.
Saint Martin de Bernegoue was during all Middle Ages attached to the marquisat of Fors. It is towards 1611 that Saint Martin de Bernegoue became a seigniory with whole share. In 1791, the parish of Saint Martin de Bernegoue was attached to the canton of Prahecq. Initially faithful to the Napoleonean mode, the commune of Saint Martin de Bernegoue gradually became hostile with the mode, refusing to send its conscripts in 1812 to it. Thereafter, the commune was indifferent to the succession of political regimes in France before being joined the Republic definitively.
A first parish church, dedicated to Sainte Marie-madeleine, was built at the 12th century with Bernegoue beside the " chastel seigneurial" and of the cemetery around the current Home of in Bottom. She was entirely destroyed in 1568 at the time of the wars of religion. There remains today only the well of the old presbytery.
The current church is an old vault dating from the 12th century. It became the parish church at the 16th century, again dedicated to Sainte Marie Madeleine. She had 3 bells which were thrown in Separates in Niort in 1793. The current bell was installed in 1844.
information given here results from the work carried out by the abbot Demellier, priest of Prahecq before the world second geurre and by Claude-Andre Fougeyrollas who took again these notes to publish a small booklet on the commune of Saint Martin de Bernegoue.
