Saint-Martin-in Ardèche is a common French, located in the department of the Ardèche and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
The commune of Saint-Martin-in Ardèche is located at the south-eastern extrème department of Ardeche and extends on 533 hectares. For the essence of Pointed Ranc, located upstream, in the Throats, to the village its territory is limited to midday by the river which gave its name to the department in 1793 and which marks on this level the border with the Gard and the commune of Aiguèze. Saint Martin's day depended besides on this one under the Old Mode. In the east and north, Saint Martin's day is bordering on the communes on Saint-Just-in Ardèche and on Saint-Marcel-Ardèche.
The climate is moderate, close to the Mediterranean type there. In north and the east, on the slopes and about half of the surface of the commune, they are extents of garrigues and holm oaks. On some slopes of hills and the narrow plain which follows, that is to say on close to 300ha of agricultural surfaces used (S.A.U.), one counts approximately 170 ha of vines, about fifty hectares of cereals but less than 10 ha in orchards whereas the plantations of cherry trees made pre-war period the prosperity of the owners (Sources: Agricultural general census of the year 2000-S.C.E.E.S). The production of wine is of very high-quality, in particular in a.O.C " Coasts of Rhône" and " Coasts of the Rhone Village".
The village was very early a crossing point for pilgrims and travellers. Since the second third of the XXe century, it is a vacation resort, particularly active, the municipality then places from there having multiplied the equipment and sructures of reception (public camp-sites of quality to which were added several different opened by private individuals, unloading dock for boats and canoes carrying out since Vallon the descent of the Ardèche river…, construction of a residence for elderly…). Since the realization of the " Tourist road of the Throats - RTGA" hundreds of thousands of visitors discover or revisit the region. The village is labellisé " Green station of Vacances" (2002). A bridge of stone connecting it to
Aiguèze, built in 1895, having been carried by a rising, in 1900, a suspended bridge was opened with circulation in
1905 - and was officially inaugurated… in July 2005 (sources: Andre Montmard,
Monograph of the commune in its river environment , Edition of the Library of Saint Martin's day May 2005).
History
Hamlet of fishermen and boatmen established on one of the fords allowing to cross the
Ardeche (apart from the periods of raw), St-Martin " of Peyre" , on Pierre, depends on
Aiguèze whose keep dominates the valley, therefore duchy of Uzès: little or not mention before beginning 16th century, with the erection of the castle of the Thicket by the close bishop of Fish ponds. The two communities have dependant destiny until the Revolution and with the creation of the departments: Aiguèze is in the
Gard Canton of Pont-Saint-Esprit, Saint Martin's day of Pierre becomes St-Martin d' Ardèche in the department of the Source-of-the-Loire become the Ardèche canton of
Borough-Saint-Andéol. The fishermen and boatmen are farmers, wine growers. As of the middle of the 20th century, the village is a small known vacation resort. After the War of 40, the installation of the valley of the Rhone, with the Donzère-Mondragon Channel then the installations of Marcoule and Eurodif, parallel to the opening through the scrubland of the Tourist Road of the Throats towards
Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and the invention of the plastic canoes make of St-Martin a holiday place which makes multiply by ten its estival population and to settle many secondary residents. It is today the tourist center of the crossroads of the four departments, Ardèche,
Gard, Drome and
Vaucluse.

Demography
On an exiguous territory of 550 ha - a village centers, two hamlets upstream: Barns, Sauze - the population St-martinoise caught up with and exceeded (approx. 700 hab. with semi-2006) that of its neighbor and stronghold
Aiguèze. By retaliatory measure narquoise, and because St-Martin was often flooded by the risings of the Ardèche, Aiguézois call St-Martinois the " Hardening-quieù".
