Saint-Martin-in-High is a common French, located in the department of the the Rhone and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

Saint Martin in Top is the 2nd larger commune of the department of the Rhone after Lyon with an total surface area of 3864 hectares. Its altitude varies from 450 m in Martinière with 921m in Crêt Pelossier. The inhabitants are called Saint-Martinois and called the " Fagotiers".

The commune is located on the watershed. Its principal rivers are Artilla and Garon which are thrown in the Rhone, Coise and Potensinet (affluent of the first) which are thrown in the Loire.

The Eastern slope, very strong topographic rupture between the Slopes and the Mounts of the Lyonese slice with a plate collinéen which covers the majority of the commune.

The Borough of St Martin is installed on a collar, on a rather remarkable site, with the intersection of these two geographical units. Of an old village located around the church, which one finds the drawing of the old streets still today, the urbanization gradually conquered the grounds neighborhood. The strong recent land pressure of the Lyons agglomeration contributed to a periurbanisation. As in the majority of the common to 30km of Lyon, a suburban tide came to destroy an identity and a strong landscape on this watershed.

On the commune of Martin Saint also the hamlet of Rochefort is, old strengthened village of the Moyen-âge attended formerly by the pilgrims on the way for Compostelle.

History

The presence of inhabitants on the commune seems to go back to prehistory. A menhir was indeed found recently. It throne currently in the park of Freedom to the bottom of the village.

One finds vestiges of the Roman epoch on the commune: the Roman way connecting Lyon to Saint Symphorien-on-Coise is visible with the hamlet of Fonfroide.

The name of Saint Martin's day appears for the first time into 984 in the writings. The village will be called successively Saint-Martin-of-Noalis, then Saint-Martin-in Annauz (at the 12th century), Saint-Martin-in Annalz (at the 13th century), Saint-Martin-in-High (as of the 17th century), Martin the Hope (during the Revolution).

To the Middle Ages, the activity of clearing of forests to increase the agricultural production gives its nickname to Saint-Martinois: Fagotiers.

It is during the Middle Ages that the borough of Rochefort, today hamlet of Saint Martin's day, developed. One raised there a wall inside which one built an always visible keep and a vault today. One finds there objects classified Historic buildings: the Virgin of Pity (end of XVe), a stained glass (fine of XVe).

Deeply religious for a long time, the commune adopts the abbot Claude Animé during the French revolution. This refractory priest with the civil constitution of the clergy symbolizes the conservatism of the called area then " The Vendée Lyonnaise".

Saint-Martin-in-High is the commune of birth of famous Pierre Grataloup, the " Small Monsieur" , chief of a band of plunderers of the Drivers of the Mounts of the Lyonese.

The church of Saint Martin's day was built of 1886 to 1889.

Personalities related to the commune

Dr. Alexis Carrel, Nobel Prize of Medicine: resided at the Castle of Built. He preached the eugenism and the euthanasia in his publications which were celebrated until the years 1950. Its remarks currently are very discussed.
