Saint-Martin-Castle

Geography

Maulde comes from the plate of Millevaches where, barred, it forms vast the Lac of Vassivière. It goes to Peyrat-the-Castle and towards the other storage reservoirs Hydroélectriques downstream. It finishes in Vienna a little front St Léonard-with-Noblat. Close to St Martin-Castle it descends the cascade from Jarrauds where one of the first hydroelectric station of France was installed. On the commune its principal affluents are the brook of Tourtoulloux (also known as brook of the Tube) and the brook of Langladure (also known as brook of Masgrangeas).

It is on the course of the Maulde, that is located the Cascade of Jarrauds which allowed in 1889 the electrification of Bourganeuf.

" planches" are a characteristic of the plate of Millevaches. These are bridges whose apron between two piles is made of large a " planche" cut stone. Sometimes there are two " planches" side by side. One needed stone which lent itself to it. It is the granite with 2 micas of Millevaches that which one calls in our " commune; hone of Compeix".

They were posed for the pedestrians, because they are in general too narrow for a cart. For those there was always a close ford. These " planches" stones weigh about 2 tons and sometimes more. They all are accessible by ways to short distance from the roads and the majority were flêchées by association " Glares of Rives". Our " planches" are 7. There are also two old bridges: Palin and Villegouleix.

It is: In the north of the commune: 3 boards of Clavelle, Bridge, Canopy In the central part: the Périne board located on the Langladure, the two boards of the Court, the ruins of the Palin bridge. In the south: the board Pierre and the bridge of Villegouleix.

History

the Cascade of Jarrauds returns in the history at the XIX century : The Town of Bourganeuf was the third French city to receive the electricity in 1886. But the brook of water of Orchard, which had accommodated the dynamo of its first factory, were too low during the summer of 1886 to correctly feed the 60 lights of Bourganeuf. One then decided to use the Cascade of Jarrauds a height of 14 measure and which it, could ensure a largely sufficient production. But this cascade was located at 14 kilometers of Bourganeuf. Thus after three years of studies and a year of work of July 1888 in April 1889, the installations of the factories of the Cascade of Jarrauds and Bourganeuf, were the first in France where one transported electricity at such a distance. The installation included/understood a water turbine of 130 CV with a generator of 100 CV. The electric cable which connected the two sites had a diameter of 5 Misters For courronner this prowess technical, the first telephone of the area connected the installations of the Cascade and Bourganeuf; whereas the use commercial of the Téléphone went back in France only to 1879. The lighting of Bourganeuf comprised 106 lamps then: lighting of the streets, church, town hall, coffees…

The elected general adviser is Bernard LABORDE, born in 1942 and in addition Maire from Saint-Pardoux-Morterolles. To the General advice, he is 3rd vice-president in charge of the Social action and medico-social and Member of the Commission Social action and medico-social.

The President of the General advice of Hollow, since 2001, is Jean-Jacques LOZACH, general adviser of Bourganeuf.

The Cascade of Jarrauds located at Saint-Martin-Castle belongs to the river Maulde, after that Ci received its affluent the Langladure. The Cascade of Jarrauds became famous in 1889 by allowing the electrification of Bourganeuf. The Cascade presents a declivity of 14 measure over a length of approximately 3 kilometers.

Personalities related to the commune

Henri Prébost is a Soldat shot for the example. It was born on September 1st, 1884 in Saint Martin Château, it lived in Villeurbanne where it exerted the trade of mason. During the war of 1914-1918, Henri Prébost was incorporated in 63e IH, 5th Co. He was shot for the example on April 20th, 1915 with Flirey with three other soldiers, following the collective refusal of his company to go back to the attack of the peak of MortMare. Rehabilitated by judgment of the special court of military justice on June 30th, 1934, Henri Prébost was designated by these superiors to be shot because it was militant trade union of the founded General confederation of work to Limoges in 1895. Henri Prébost and Felix Baudy his companion of Royère-with-Vassivière were restored in their honor in 1934. The Fusillés for the example of Flirey are added to those of Vingré, Fontenoy, Fleury, Mouilly, Montauville… In four years, 2.400 " Hairy " will have been condemned to died and 600 carried out, the others seeing their sorrow commuted to forced labors. Henri Prébost is buried in Villeurbanne.
