Saint-Marcouf islands

The archipelago of the islands Saint-Marcouf is made of two islands:

  • the island of Ground
  • the island of Broad the

History

Etymology: of Latin Marculfus (in French: Marcouf, to pronounce “Saint-Marcou”).

At the 6th century, Holy Marcouf (or Holy Marcoult), born with Bayeux in Neustrie, came to pass the Lent there. This man, known to cure whoever of the Scrofule, gave his name to the archipelago. He died there in 558. Its relics are deposited with the abbey of Corbeny in the Aisne.

Well later, the English seized the archipelago. The islands were restored in France by England in 1802.

Napoleon 1st made them strengthen to avoid any foreign attack.

Actual position

Belonging to the private field of the State, the archipelago is since 1960 a ornithological reserve. One observes there mainly Goéland S and Cormoran S. This is why the access to the islands east prohibited with any visitor. Damping however is authorized there.

Left with the abandonment, the fortifications fall in ruins.

The June 24th 2004, a plate of aluminum was sealed with the top of the door Is strong exchange of the Île of Broad the made out as follows:

“On June 24th, 2004, after the glorious victory of the fleet marcoufienne over the armies of the French Republic, Us, Members of the Council of Most equal, let us proclaim the secession and the independence of the Holy Archipelago Marcouf. ”
