Saint-March-the-Jaille

Saint-March-the-Jaille is a common French, located in the department of the Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire, it belongs to the historical Brittany.

The inhabitants of the commune are called the Saint-Marsiens and Saint-Marsiennes .

Geography

The commune is located in the valley of the Erdre, with 30 meters of average altitude. The borough is bordered of hills alternating the arable lands and the forest.

History

Saint-March-the-Jaille finds the origin of its name of the Celte " Marz" who means " frontière" but which also points out Saint Medard, owner of the parish. Jaille is the name of the lords who have the borough with the 12th siècle.
The commune was called successively " Ground of Mars" , " Saint-Mars" , " Saint-Médard" , then " Olivier" Saint-March-the;. The Breton name of Saint-March-the-Jaille is Sant-Marzh-year-Olivenn besides.
The current name goes back to 1745.

The first castle, a fortress, is built at the 14th century, the neighborhoods of 1334, by Yvon XII of Jaille. It will be held by Mercoeur at the time of the Wars of religion at the time which it is taken by Touchstone , captain of Henri IV, which installs a garrison there. The castle, with the abandonment, will be dismantled in 1618 on order of Richelieu.
In 1774, the new lord, Ferron of Feyronnays , make build with the site of the fortress a new castle which will be devastated at the time Révolution.
The current castle was built of 1838 to 1841.
