Saint-Marcel is a Canadian Municipalité of the Quebec located in the regional Municipalité of county of Islet and the administrative area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains.
Geography
Saint-Marcel is located at 130 km of Quebec in the south-east of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains area, in the sector " Coast-of-sud" , on the Appalachian plate . Close to the American border , one halfway finds it between Holy-Happiness and Holy-Apolline-with-Patton. The landscape consists of hills and valleys varying between 250 and 450 meters of altitude. The hydrography of the sector is very developed, one counts there several rivers and lakes, Saint-Marcel being in extreme cases of two areas catchment towards the Fleuve the St. Lawrence in north and towards the border in the south: the Large Black river, the Rock river, as well as the Cayen lakes, with Ducks, of Apic, the Rocks and Fountain Claire.
Economic activity
Agriculture (breeding of bovines dairy and particular) and the Acériculture are the main activity of the places and exceeded the forestry development, in addition to the presence of career and sand pit. History
In 1865 the Canton of Arago (in the honor of the astronomer and French politician is established François Arago (1786-1853). The brothers Furrier, originating in the village close to Saint-Cyrille, were the first occupants of the places. Among the first establishment of the sector, one counts a mission established in 1882, which will be civilly high in 1904 and canonically in 1924 like the parish of " Saint-Marcel-in-the Islet". The municipality of Saint-Marcel is formed in 1956 pennies the same name. Although the exact reasons of the name of the first mission is not known, the sources indicate that it ultimement refers according to any probability to saint Marcel Ier, pope from 308 to 309, under the Roman Emperor Maxence. Because formerly certain inhabitants of the village had taken the practice to wear wide hats braided with straw, Marcellois received the nickname of Straw hats .
Between 1981 and 2001, the population of the municipality was reduced of 18%, affected by the fall in the birth rate and the ageing of the population.
