History

In the area of Between-two-seas, exist several villages containing word BARES: Ambarès and Lagrave and co.-Eulalie of Ambarès: is this there the origin of the BARÈS, lords of Montferrand? The ground of Montferrand (near to Bassens) was sold into 1591 with the Jurat S of Bordeaux.

The first name of the MONTFERRAND was BARES: Amanieu of BARES, rider and lord of Montferrand, name mentioned in an act passed to Bordeaux with the Palate of Ombrière on February 13rd, 1242 /43

The cradle of the family of MONTFERRAND was Guyenne; lords, top-dispensers of justice of one of the most important baronnies of of Bordeaux and, in this quality, allowed with the first ranks of the nobility; one sees elder this house, during several generations, to bear only the name of BARES, follow-up at once of the qualifier of MONTFERRAND. The juniors retain only this last name. But since Bertrand II of MONTFERRAND, combined in 1365 in Rose of ALBRET, i.e. since the XIV° century, the name of BARES disappears to entirely make place with that of MONTFERRAND.

The dignitaries who are known for us are the following: Amaubin I of BARES, lord of MONTFERRAND, seneshal of Lannes, governor of the county of Bigorre (1242-1271), married to Gaillarde of CASTILLON. Bertrand II of MONTFERRAND (1354-1410) knight banneret combined in Rose of ALBRET. Bertrand III of MONTFERRAND (1409-1435), governor of combined Marmande with Marguerite of ASTARAC, then in Isabeau of PREISSAC. Bertrand IV of MONTFERRAND (1435-1474), adviser and chamberlain of the duke of Guyenne, married about 1450 in Jeanne of LUXURY. Gaston I° of MONTFERRAND adviser and chamberlain of the King of FRANCE, governor of Borough, seneshal of Bazadais (1471-1504), married Jeanne of MAINGOT of SURGÈRES. Pierre I° of MONTFERRAND (1513-1547) captain of a company of men-at-arms, married about 1508 in Marie of CARMAIN and FOIX. Charles II of MONTFERRAND, governor of Bordeaux, died in 1574, married his Marguerite cousin of MONTFERRAND. Pierre II of MONTFERRAND, known as of LESPARRE, governor of Blaye, decapitated in Poitiers in 1454. François IV of MONTFERRAND known as of LESPARRE, first pannetier of the duke of Guyenne, married about 1470 in Yolande CARION. Lastly, among the descendants of holy JEANNE of LESTONNAC, it is necessary to quote his own son: François IV of MONTFERRAND, ordinary gentleman of the room of the King, and captain of light horses, combined in 1600 in Marguerite of CAZALIS. And the grandson of Holy JEANNE of LESTONNAC: Bernard of MONTFERRAND, teaches gendarmes of the Queen, married in 1647 in Delphine of PONTAC History O.D.N.
