Saint-Leger-in-Yvelines

Saint-Leger-in-Yvelines is a common French, located in the department of the Yvelines and the area Île-de-France.

Its inhabitants is called the Léodégariens .

Geography

The commune of Saint-Leger-in-Yvelines is in the center of Yvelines, in the middle of the main forest of Rambouillet, with 11 kilometers in the North-West of Rambouillet, chief town of district and with 37 kilometers in the south-west of Versailles, the prefecture of the department.

The communes bordering are Mesnuls in the North-East, the Breviaries in the east, Poigny-the-Forest in the south, the Boissière-School in south-west, Cop-on-Vesgre with the west-south-west, Gambaiseuil in the North-West, Grosrouvre with the north-north-west and Montfort-l' Amaury in north.

The communal territory is relatively vast, 3452 hectares, that is to say four times the average yvelinoise. It extends on approximately 8 km from north in the south and 6 km of are in west. It occupies a plate at an altitude varying between 175 and 180 meters with the top of the sea level, notched multiple small valleys by the many brooks running out in all the directions, but mainly towards the west and north.

On the hydrographic level, the principal rivers are the Vesgre, small 45 kilometers length river, tributary of the the Eure, which takes its source in the commune of the Bréviaires and runs out towards the west, crossing the site of the village, the brook of the Bridges-Quentins, emissary of the ponds of Holland which runs in direction of the west in the northern part of the commune and is thrown in Vesgre with Gambais, Guyonne, brook of 11,3 kilometers, tributary of the Mauldre, which is born in north from the commune and runs out towards the North-East.

The common one also counts several pond S low-size of which the pond of Broken.

The communal territory is primarily rural, to 94%. The rural areas, which cover more than 3300 hectares is covered out of quays totality by the forest, except for some clearings dedicated to the cultures, in particular to the south of the village. With these spaces 126 hectares of green areas are added, of which the field of the castle of Planet, in the west of the commune.

Urbanized space represents 66 hectares (given 1999), made up primarily of individual habitat.

The habitat is grouped in the village, which tends to develop towards the south.

The commune is crossed by the secondary road 938 which leads to Cop-on-Vesgre towards the North-West and to Rambouillet towards the south. The secondary road 138 leads to Montfort-l' Amaury towards north, the secondary road 111 which begins with the right of this RD 138 to north of the village leads to Gambaiseuil towards the North-West and the secondary road 61 leads to the Bréviaires towards south-east.

The commune is not served by the railroad. The station the SNCF nearest is that of the Perray-in-Yvelines, with approximately eight kilometers in south-east.

Heraldic

Etymology

The name of Saint-Leger-in-Yvelines would be, according to certain historians, related to the martyr of holy Leger, bishop of Autun, assassinated in 678, which would have been drowned in a pond of the forest of Yveline by its enemy, Ébroïn, mayor of the palate of Neustrie and Burgundy.

Origins

The territory of Saint-Leger-in-Yvelines is inhabited since the prehistoric time. In attests particularly the Pierre Ardoue, vestige of a Dolmen of the Neolithic time (located at approximately 2 km in the North-West of the village).

At the time Gallic, Saint-Leger, included/understood in the vast forest of Yveline, was in the middle of the territory of the Carnutes which extended between the Seine and the Loire.

Culture

Architectural heritage

  • Church Saint-Jean-Baptist: in the beginning, a church was built for the king of France Robert the Piles in 1026 or 1031; there remain the trenchers about it arcs of the Transept. The bell-tower dates from XIIIe century and the Nef and the chorus were rebuilt in XVIe century. The oldest parts, whose bell-tower, are incrites with the historic buildings since 1933.
  • It remains only alleviating ruins of the two old castles.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Peter Townsend, officer British of the Royal Air Force, made famous for its unhappy connection with the princess Margaret, is buried in the cemetery of the village where it finished his days.
