Saint-Lazare leper-house of Angers
History
Foundation
The
Léproserie Saint-Lazare was rested by the brotherhood of the middle-class men of
Angers at the beginning of the 12th century (C.
1104 -
1120).
Loss of religious function
The leper-house lost its charitable function at the end of the 17th century and any religious function at the end of the 18th century following the royal edict of translation of the cemeteries out of the cities. However, the vault had not been destroyed, and “had been divided” in livable units then completely plastered. An archaeological intervention allowed the fortuitous redécouverte this building in
1991.
Nature of the occupants
Evolution of the term
The leper-house always carried the term to Saint Lazare.
Evolution of the statute during the working life
The building was always a leper-house.
