Saint-Laurent-the-rock

Saint-Laurent-the-Rock is a common French, located in the department of the the Jura and the area Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are the catoulans.

Geography

  • Saint-Laurent-the-Rock is located at the top of the first Western link of the Jura mounts, with ten kilometers in the south of Lons-the-Salt maker; he makes party of the first plate, while dominating the Bressane plain.

History

  • “Etienne II, vassal count of Burgundy, made build a formidable castle on the top of the rock. Soon of many inhabitants grouped under the protection of the new fortress, and formed a borough which was closed walls. ”

  • will retain Us the name of Etienne de Dizier, who was the unhappy hero of a terrible drama of family. He had married, in Louhans, in 1319, Huguette of co. cross, famous for his beauty. Huguette lived the castle of St-Laurent with her husband. This one very extravagant, ends up absorbing its fortune, and though beautiful rider, became soon completely odious with his wife.

  • leaning incestueux that it had for her Guillaume brother-in-law, lord of the manor of Alièze, led it to the assassination. One night of February 1328 was selected to remove Etienne of its castle. One locked up it in a low room, but one did not dare yet to kill it. However, through gold and of caresses, Huguette decided a peasant to kill her husband (1870). Etienne was strangled, and his corpse thrown in a deep cavity, within wood, between Alièze and Présilly, where it was found two years afterwards by a bird-catcher.
  • Huguette married then Philippe of Vienna, lord de Pymont, one of the most brilliant lords of Burgundy.
  • Philippe II, king d' Espagne, ordered into 1470 that the fortress of St-Laurent was dismantled, some repairs were made there in 1636.
  • After the peace of Westphalia, the prince of orange to which the castle had been restored made a solemn entry there on October 28th, 1648.
  • This station was still important when Louis XIV ordered the demolition in 1668 of it.

  • the village of St-Laurent-the-Rock is an old medieval city.

  • the castle was built on the remains of a Roman castellum, which had probably replaced a Gallic enclosure, because there is no doubt that the Séquanes tributes and then the Romans had not noticed the facility of defense of this escarpé point.
It was one of the manors of the Middle Ages best strengthened by nature and art, of all the County of Burgundy. Thanks to its position, thanks to the thickness of its walls, there remained intact until the end of the 17th century, sentinel advanced to defend the province against the attacks of the enemies; also hastened they to destroy the old keep, which remaining upright would have still invited the people of surrounding to resistance.
  • the Borough:
The place was surrounded by three sides, in north, the morning and midday by good fortifications. As for the side of the west at that time, looking at France, its escarpment almost with peak, made it inaccessible. The ramparts, at morning, had been prolonged until front and in bottom the châtelet, and as in lower part of this rampart there was a small small valley (Condamines) low and lengthened, the place was regarded as impregnable before the invention of the powder. The borough, contiguous with the enclosure even of the castle and spread out over the reverse of the mountain was surrounded by thick walls, defended by grosses towers with the angles, with doors provided with drawbridges.

Personalities related to the commune

  • the captain Lacuzon, hero of independence comtoise, remained a long time with the castle of Saint-Laurent-the-Rock which it invests by surprised in the first days of November 1641 whereas it was with the hands of the French soldiers. This castle-extremely became the general headquarter of Lacuzon.
