Saint-Laurent-of-the-Salt marsh

Saint-Laurent-of-the-Salt marsh is a common French, located in the department of the the Eastern Pyrenees and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its inhabitants is called Laurentins.

Geography

Commune located on the Agly

As its name indicates it, Saint Laurent is located in a zone of Salanque, which is a type of ground correpondant with the pond which borders it and means " ground salée".

History

Historically Saint Laurent of the Salt marsh included/understood the littoral commune of the Barcarès. The scission between the two remainder recent but one tends to forget his maritime roots.

  • Eloi Pino, founder of the town of Djibouti.

Born in 1845 († 1907) at St Laurent, wire of café owner and become adult, Captain with the long course with the “pirate” activities, it sails towards the Abyssinie, (where it will meet Arthur Rimbaud), in prey with the pangs of the war. Eloi PINO, decides to engage in the trade of the weapons which cruelly the king Ménélik II needs and settles in “Djibouti” while making build a house into hard, thus creating the town of Djibouti. Pierre Latécoère manufacturer of Avion S with Toulouse conceives the revolutionary project to connect Toulouse with the South America by the way of the airs. It will be Jean Mermoz who will achieve the exploit of the 1st crossing of the Atlantique while passing by the pond of St Laurent (a base of tests is created at St Laurent by the Latécoère company in 1925, which will be destroyed by German lasting the 2nd world war) in direction of Santiago of Chile.
