Saint-Laurent-of-Brèvedent

the St. Lawrence de Brèvedent is a common French, located in the department of the Seine-Maritime and the area High-Normandy.

Its inhabitants is called Saint-Laurentais.

This commune is located on Right Bank of the the Seine, with about fifteen kilometers of the Havre, in the canton of Saint-Romain-with-Colbosc.

It is established on a chalky plate culminating to a hundred meters to the top of the sea level, cut in its medium by a valley where the St. Lawrence runs.

History

The commune owes its name with Saint Laurent, owner of the Church. The word “Brèvedent” probably comes from the origins beber (beaver) and daum (river), which one can translate by “river with the beavers” (*)

The first signs of human presence are noted on the wooded slopes of the village, approximately 5000 years before our era.

The site developed considerably with the Middle Ages, with the construction of a first church at the 12th century. Only still remains its bell-tower, the remainder having been entirely rebuilt between 1865 and 1879.

A rare characteristic is the presence of a school as of the Middle Ages, even if it functioned in an irregular way. It will be replaced by a new building in 1789, during the revolution, then in 1892, and finally in 1994.

The common one was a local tourist success during second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century, the opening of a railway station in 1847 making it possible to the inhabitants of Le Havre to come to rest Sunday there, in beautiful villas which are still visible in the district " allotment of Catillon" (called today Riviera ). The calm one of the countryside, far from the industrial and military targets, the relative proximity of Le Havre and the accessibility, will make of it a sure place of refuge for many townsmen during the bombardments of the Second world war.

Lastly, the Hydrologie plays a big role in the commune, which conceals many sources. In 1854, a private company built the first station of collecting. Then, in 1881 the city of Le Havre repurchased existing collectings ( the St. Lawrence , the Plum trees and Catillon ). It uses them since to feed approximately a quarter of its inhabitants (the remainder coming from collectings of Radicâtel to Saint-Jean-with-Folleville).

(*) It will be noted for this reason that beber resembles phonetically beaver ( beaver in English) and daum with gift ( river in the Germanic and Eastern-European languages).

Places and monuments

The primitive church was built for Galeran, priest of the place and senior of the Cathédrale of Rouen (confirmation of the right of patronage of the abbey of Boscherville in 1131).

The church is announced in bad condition in 1713: the vault under the bell-tower partly fell, the cover of the nave is degraded considerably, the northern wall threatens to fall in ruin. In 1845, the abbot Cochet mentions the Nef 12th century, restored outside, the bell-tower 12th century and the new chorus. The nave is rebuilt in 1865 by preserving the bell-tower between chorus and nave like turn porch, by the Dauphine architect. The chorus is built in 1879 by the architects Martin and Marical (plane in 1879).
