Saint-Laurent-du-Pont

Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is a common French, located in the department of the Isere and the area the Rhone-Alps. Its inhabitants are called “Laurentinois”.

Geography

Located between the plain of Guiers and the Massive of Chartreuse, Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is the principal door of Chartreuse. This commune belongs to the Regional natural park of Chartreuse. The city is crossed by the named river Guiers Mort, at its exit of the solid mass.

Administration

History

The occupation of the site of Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is proven as of the Paleolithic means. This one is confirmed by explorations of Hippolyte Müller in 1922 and those of A.Bocquet and P.Lequatre in 1966 in the shelter known as " The cave of Eugles" , occupied by the Homme of Néandertal there are 60 or 70.000 years.

With the Hamlet of the " Fagots" , close to the Villette, a bust, probably of Gallo-Roman origin, was discovered in 1860. Being connected with a votive furnace bridge dedicated to Mercury, it presents a sculporthographeture of style and technique " indigène" in a typically Roman monument.

In 1919, a farmer of the Villette, Mr Alphonse Feugier, updates a great number of Gallic silver moneys of origin and Roman Republic. Contained in a small vase, oldest went back to 151 before the most recent J.C, of 45 before J.C. This treasure, known as " Monetary treasury of Saint-Laurent-of-Pont" , hidden 45 before J shortly after. a.c., unfortunately, dispersed quickly near private collectors. Only some coins were acquired by the Public library of Grenoble and the Museum From the Dauphine with the beginning of the year 1920.

In 1084, the establishment of the monastery of the Pères Carthusian monk (stockbreeders, foresters, ironmasters, distillers of liquor) on the heights of the marshy plains was at the origin of the development of a plural industry.

Before 1275, the commune bore the name of “Saint Laurent of the Desert”. The construction of a bridge with Fourvoirie gave place to the name change.

The commune found a dynamism certain in the middle of the 19th century thanks to its sawmills, its spinning mills, the metallurgy and the cement factory of the Société Vicat.

In 1888, the Fathers Carthusian monk, not wishing more to exploit they same the steel-works of Fourvoirie, yield this one to Mr Paul Paturle.

The metallurgical activities settle in new buildings, in the plain since 1920, with the site of the current supermarket, practically opposite the church Saint Bruno.

In the night from November 14th to 15th 1935, an enormous flow mud and rocks causes the destruction of the distilling of the Pères Carthusian monk, tourist attraction major of the time. This one was transferred to Voiron in 1936. The ruins are currently in rehabilitation. On Right Bank of Guiers, opposite, one can see the old metallurgical site Paturle and, a little higher upstream, the bridge of Fourvoirie.

November 1st 1970, a fire in a named discotheque the " 5-7" because death of 146 people whose vast majority was minor. The titles of the press in connection with this event inspired the drafting of the famous one of Hara-Kiri as for the death of Charles de Gaulle: “Tragic Ball with Colombey: 1 dead”, which was worth with the weekly magazine to be censured and to reappear the following week under the title of Charlie Hebdo .

Community life

Racing TEAM rocharay (RTR): organizing club of the regional Car rally of Chartreuse. At the end of August, the rally course Chartreuse, to become one of the most beautiful regional rallys of the area, even of France.

The Social center of the Countries of Guiers , structure approved and labellized by the Family allowance office, recognized public utility from its affiliation at the French federation of the Center Social, works permanently with the development of the daily life, social and economic. In a world if upset, the social center is almost a puff of oxygen.
