St Julien of Oddes-short history

What will be Saint Julien d' Odddes was formed on old Gallo-Roman strongholds established along the large one will vicharra, way between Pinay and serving Grezolles of the black leads. One finds there Beaudinat, Oddes, Serchant, Chavagneux ..........
The religious spirit appears there in the worship of nature: worship of the sources at the bottoms bénites, temple with the goddess fortune, tooth with the anti-rabic virtue with Fumerle and also a curious megalith, known as “hones cantor” who will not be preserved. To christianization these places were dedicated to other saints, of which St Michel.
It is only at the XIII century that the parish under the term of Julien will be founded, martyr of the very popular country, dead decapitated with Brioude. In 1326 it depends on the canons of St Jean of Lyon and one associates to him the name of largest of his strongholds “Oddes”: Saint Julien d' Oddes was born!
At the XIV century one will build his church: a small chorus with flat bedside with two small vaults dedicated to St Michel and co. Marguerite. One is held to with it upright. The population gathers outside to discuss and elect its consuls charged to regulate the litigations and to distribute the taxes. Brotherhoods there are instituted, that of died for maintains the cemetery and that of St Spirit to come to assistance of the poor and the mendiants.
The population grows quickly and in 1561 one must build one second span of Romance style and a platform called pouty which will be demolished by the Durand priest at the XVIII century, following a scandal made by enivrés young people come to sing vespers at the time of the festival patronale.
The XVII century a generous giver, the François Jesuit of the Chair of Aix, confessor of Louis XIV, allows to build a splendid retable out of wooden gilded with statues of the saints, a table representing the Rise and a small bell. Finally a legacy of the Breuil priest allows the construction of a third span in 1876 and one project of arrow on the bell-tower which with the revolution could not succeed. The Beauvoir priest at the XIX century made replace the wood furnace bridge by another out of white marble sculpté.
It is difficult to follow the evolution of the population which was more numerous than nowadays: the plague of 1347 was so mortal that the priest could not abound with the help leaving the hamlet of Marcilleux to the care of the priests of German Saint Laval who, then, has it récupéré.
The great plague of 1628 made him lose half of its population, then the famine of the 1694, during which one ate ferns, misery which followed the Napoleonean epopee and the wars of last century bring its population to 280 inhabitants, rural in great majority with two craftsmen: a mason and a carpenter. However these last years transfer the number of the farms to be reduced from 40 to 11 and the departure of the young people for an external work while new loving inhabitants the countryside came there installer.
As for his church, which knew to resist its closing after the revolution thanks to a cardinal, uncle de Napoléon, it lost his priest appointed in 1936 and its furnace bridge is deserted by the priests since 2000. Its night illumination still gives the exchange in spite of its roof abused by the storm which still protects a true pertaining to worship treasure and its saints in the cold who always testify to a religious spirit which appears sometimes.
