Saint-Joseph-of-River is a common French, located in the department of the Isere and the area the Rhone-Alps.
The commune is located in an old glaciated valley, with the northern foot of the Massif of Chartreuse. It is separated from Saint-Laurent-du-Pont by the natural reserve of the peat bogs of Herretang.
Located at the crossroads of Voiron, Grenoble and Chambéry, Saint Joseph de Rivière occupies a privileged place, so much these towns of importance are close and distant at the same time: the village of 1100 inhabitants, dominated by the Large Sour one (1920 m), fits in a peaceful small valley delimited by the chain of Large Sour in the east and thereafter of the rocks of Ratz, Large Crossey and the slopes of Aupre Saint in the west. This natural ECRIN is crossed by the brook of Choroland and the brook of Merdaret, prolonged by the Channel of Herretang, which traverses the plain right through
At the time the main resources of the commune come from the extraction from the peat in the marshes from Herretang for manufacture from tiles and bricks, of the weaving of hemp and silk, the manufacture of gloves, the cut of wood and agriculture. Today, only the furnaces of Jay tileries and Donnier-Valentine, among most beautiful of those which still exist in the Dauphine one, remain the witnesses of these old activities. Saint Joseph de Rivière also preserves the Peat bog, site classified as “remarkable natural space” where one can walk and observe the fauna and the flora of moist environments. At the time, Saint Joseph formed integral part of the commune of Saint Laurent of the Bridge, but the climatic conditions prevented sometimes the faithful ones from going to the church to attend the offices. Far from discouraging itself, the riviérois decided to build their own church. Thus Saint Joseph became a parish, then a commune, six years later on July 14th, 1836, under the reign of Louis Philippe. Since 1880 a railway line to vapor is created, active of Voiron on the Scales while passing through Saint Joseph, with the great project to connect the department of Isere to that of Savoy. The development of the rail traffic involves the construction of a station at the entry of the borough in 1894.
The peat bog of Herretang covers 69 hectares on the communes of St Laurent of the Bridge and St Joseph de Rivière. Remainder of a vast marshy zone, it is bordered in the west by the link of Ratz and the channel of Herretang, and in the east by the solid mass of Chartreuse. The peat, traditionally used as fuel, results from the decomposition and the fossilization of emerged plants. The peat bogs are protected today. Many rare plants (153 plant species were indexed) of which the fern of the marshes, live in this marshy zone. Some as the utricular ones adapted to this boggy medium while becoming carnivorous. This significant natural space is used of relay road for the migratory birds and refuge for a crowd of floral species. She represents the greatest wetland of the Regional natural park of Chartreuse The peat bog of Herretang, classified zone natural space, is opened with the visit since 2000. The cave of Saint Joseph de Rivière, retorts that of Doors, was built in 1880, by Abbot BUISSIERE to thank the Virgin for having allowed the cure of his/her sister. A little history: Towards the end of last century, Chamoine BUISSIERE, originating in JOSEPH SAINT OF RIVER and chaplain of the Convent of the Birds with VOIRON, was in despair because his/her sister, itself religious of Visistation, would die. The doctors did not see how to save it. The abbot BUISSIERE, devout enthusiast of our lady of DOORS, addressed himself with enthusiasm to celestial protection, and made the wish spread his recent worship. He succeeds in getting some miraculous water drops for the patient who it following day was cured. The canon thinks then of the manner of filling his wish. It remembered that a corner of its native village pointed out the landscape of DOORS: a hill timbered at the entry of a combe, a small torrent, a grassy esplanade… but not of cave! It decided to do one of them. Devoting to this work the money little which it had, helped by all the village of JOSEPH SAINT, the piles old man made dig the mountain and built the cave of all parts with the descended rocks.
The inauguration and the blessing took place in 1880. An important pilgrimage proceeded there each year, the Whit Monday, and on December 8th, from faithful gathered to fallen the night in front of the furnace bridge brilliantly enlightened, came to sing canticles there.
