Immigrant commune more of Belgium
Source of the data of the table: National institute of Statistics, figures at January 1st.
At one time, it was the only commune of Belgium whose population was mainly foreign, mainly of Turkish and Moroccan origin. Currently, the electorate of foreign origin became majority by the means of acquisitions of nationality and the majority of the communal advisers, as well as half of the college échevinal, is originating in the Morocco, Turkey and the Congo (DRC). Jean Demannez, burgomaster: “ the population of Saint-Jose is Belgian to 64%. But that does not want to say large-thing. The Belgian indentity card does not imply however that people did not preserve the specific lifestyle and traditions to their country of origin. In Saint-Jose, there is no more that 20% of the population whose grandfather was Belgian. For 8 fellow-citizens out of ten, the grandfather was an immigrant: French, Italian, Turkish or Morrocan, Spanish, etc It is thus an excessively important cultural mixing, with, which more is, a young population ” (interview of the 11/24/2003).
The poorest commune of Belgium?
Tax statistics of the incomes, 2000: “ In terms of incomes per capita, if Laethem-Saint-Martin remains the richest commune of the country, Saint-Jose-ten-Noode remains good last ” (INS)Jean Demannez, burgomaster: “ it is necessary to relativize: if the average revenue of the inhabitants is of 227.000 Bef per annum, it is due amongst other things to this strong proportion less than twenty-five years, of which much does not have incomes yet. Moreover, many families with much of children are not submitted to the tax. It is important to say: Saint-Jose is not the poorest commune of the country, as opposed to what one could convey like information ” (interview of the 11/24/2003).
History
Until the end of the 19th century, Saint-Jose extended to the borders from Ixelles and Etterbeek, and included in particular the major part of the current European district of Brussels, the Schuman roundabout, the Fiftieth anniversary and the Place of Luxembourg. It was forced to sell these grounds at the Town of Brussels to be able to refund debts contracted following a not very judicious management of communal finances.
