Saint-Jean-of-Gard

Saint-Jean-of-Gard is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Geography

Saint-Jean-of-Gard is a village located at the foot of the cornice of the the Cevennes, in the Gard not far from Alès and of Nimes bordered by the Gardon.

History

This village, called in the past Saint Jean-of-Gardonnenque, was very influenced by the Protestantisme at the 16th century century and became a high place of resistance of the Camisard S as of 1683.

The village will know one boom at the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the breeding of the Bombyx and the Mûrier which produce the Soie.

This Cevennes village saw now mainly Tourisme.

A steam train makes the line of Midsummer's Day of Gard with Anduze with a stop with the Bamboo plantation.

Personalities related to the commune

  • the marshal of Thoiras (1585 - 1636) (also spelled Toiras), born at Midsummer's Day, which illustrated under Louis XIII, in particular in the seat from La Rochelle and in the combat against the English with the Ile de Ré. Its glory made shade with the Cardinal of Richelieu, which it déchut in 1633 of the dignity of Marshal of France which had been conferred to him in 1630.
  • the October 3rd 1878, the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson completed in Saint-Jean-of-Gard its twelve days tour through the the Cevennes as he reports it in his Voyage with an ass in the Cevennes (1879).
  • Joseph Pellet of Lozere (1785 - 1871), Minister for the State education then Minister for Finance under the Monarchy of July), born at Midsummer's Day.
  • Louis-Nathaniel Rossel (1844 - 1871), deputy secretary with the War of the Commune of Paris (1871) is resulting from a republican Protestant family of Saint-Jean-of-Gard and Nimes. The household head, Augustin Rossel, were mayor of this commune twice in second half of the 19th century.
