Protected well by the castle from Marthonie, built at the same time, and initially sheltering sixteen regular canons according to the rule of Saint Augustin, the priory radiates quickly on all the area and less than one century after its creation, its possessions extend to Limoges and Périgueux, while a prosperous village is born and develops around the priory.

In 1394, the English devastate and set fire to the castle, as well as the Priory, whose grounds are devastated and the dispersed canons. In 1669, the bishop of Périgueux requires the realization of the repair work and constrained the monks to adopt the rule of Génovéfains.

With the Revolution, the canons disappear; the buildings are sold, the books and the manuscripts are flarings. The village of Saint-Jean-of-Adhesive knew a new prosperity during the 19th century, with construction then the startup of the railway Angouleme - Brive, which passed by Nontron, Saint Jean de Côle and Thiviers.
