  • In the middle of the 19th century, Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds represents one of the most extended communes of France. It extends from Rochetaillée with Sorbiers on 2800 hectares and account more than 8800 inhabitants. The economic development and demographic of common rests mainly on the mine and passementerie. The passage of a new railway connecting Lyon to Saint-Etienne and the establishment of a railway station result in developing the iron and steel industry of the blast furnaces installed with Terrenoire. This development involves migrations of important populations. Demographic imbalance and the pressure of the ironmasters lead in 1866 to the creation of the commune of Terrenoire. In 1872, Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds (with Sorbs) is cut down once again by his territory, after the creation of the commune of the Talaudière, where an important mining activity concentrates.
  • At the beginning of the 20th century, the population as well as the traditional economic activity decline: mine, ribbon, agriculture. The activities diversify then.
