Saint-Hilaire-the-Cross is a common French, located in the department of the Puy-de-Dôme and the area of Auvergne. Saint-Hilaire-the-Cross belongs to the urban surface of Clermont-Ferrand.
Geography
History
The history of Saint-Hilaire-the-Cross is closely related to that of the two priories which coexisted until the 14th century: that of Lake-Red or Lake-Roy which, by deformation, will give the Cross and that of Saint-Hilaire of which it remains only some stones on the edges of Morge. The monks, canons regular of Saint-Augustin (priory of the Red Lake), are dependant on the chapter of Artonne and the bishop of Auvergne. They are in competition with the priory of Saint-Hilaire, located at one mile and half more at the south, depend on the abbey of Mozac. In 1324, the annexation of this last will be done with the profit of the Lake-Roy and gradually, will take form the local identity and nuns of Saint-Hilaire-Lake-Roy. The priory ensures the reception and the safety of the pilgrims. It thrives during the S and profits from many donations and many feudal rights of which that of high, average and low justice. In 1337, it had to be defended militarily against the lord of Tournoël-Châteauneuf. In 1600, there is no more monk with Saint-Hilaire. The priors became commendataires and do not reside on the spot any more. In 1678, the priory becomes the property of the fathers lazarists of Paris who name the priest of the parish. The benefit are assigned to the maintenance of Lazaristes ensuring the service of the Hotel of the Invalids of Paris. In 1742, the priory is sold like national goods and after the Revolution and the signature of the Legal settlement, the church becomes parochial.

- the Romance church of the 12th century: the northern gate with its two grooved pillars of Burgundian style, its eight columns, its pylobé tympanum and a carved archivolt external of palmettes and seven characters of which Marie Madeleine, owner of the priory. The southern door gives in the court of the priory. It is surmounted by a tympanum semicircular arch representing the meal of Jesus at Simon the pharisee with Marie Madeleine with the feet of Jesus. Inside the church, beautiful capitals with transept crossing are noticed of which the most famous dancer and the player of viol.
- the priory of the Lake-Red or Lake-Roy, which, by deformation, will give The-Cross: the constitutive instrument of the Priory goes back to 1128. Initial building remains: the Western pinion, side walls of the nave and certain walls of the transept. The bedside, the absidioles and the interior of the nave were rebuilt at the end of the 12th century. The northern gate and the southern part took seat in the old side walls also at the end of the 12th century. The whole of the sculptures is same time.
