Saint-Hélier ( Holy Hélyi in Jersey, Holy Helier in English) is the Capitale of the Channel Island of Jersey. In popular speech, the parish is usually called the City.

Administrative divisions

Formally, Saint-Hélier is one of the 12 Paroisse S of Jersey. The parish contains the majority of the city (but part of the city is with Saint-Saver) as well as territory in rural matter.

Administratively, the parish is divided into six scores as follows:

The parish is divided into 3 Circonscription S electoral:

  • No 1 (Score of the City) - 3 elected Deputies
  • No 2 (Score of Bottom of the Mount to the Priest, Score Top of the Mount to the Priest) - 3 elected Deputies
  • No 3 (Score of the Red Bubble, Score of the Mount to the Abbot, Score of the Mount Pig) - 4 elected Deputies

Saint-Hélier thus has 11 votes (its 10 Deputies and its Connétable) in the States of Jersey. The Vice-chancellor of Saint-Hélier, being at the same time Senior of Jersey, also sits at the States, but does not have right to vote. However the Vice-chancellor sits and votes at the Committee of the Ways of the parish and chairs at the time of the ecclesiastical Assemblies.

History

The parish draws its name from the saint evangelist of Jersey, Hélier which was martyrisé there at the 6th century.
