Saint-Guilhem-the-Desert (in Occitan Sant Guilhèm dau Serves ) is a common French located in the department of the Herault. Its inhabitants is called Saint-Guillaumois.
Geography
The village is located in the valley of Verdus which comes jetter in the Herault.The agglomeration is primarily made up of a medieval village which is located on the road which leads to Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle. This village is preserved in its country of origin. Because of its distance, Saint Guilhem created there the monastery of Gellone.
History
With the VIIe century, there exists a county of Gellone. Towards 710 de Gellone said sometimes Ruodhaid is born to with it Rhothilde, which will become famous while being starting from 728 the only great love of Charles Martel. It will give him four children, of which Aude of France (732 - after 755). Aude will marry Thierry Ier of Autun and will give him three wire, whose Guillaume with which will return the ancestral field, and which will bear the name of Guillaume de Gellone.In 804, Guillaume de Gellone founds there the abbey of Gellone, which after its death the May 28th 812 will become the abbey of Saint-Guilhem (Guilhem being the shape occitane of Guillaume). The relic of a piece of the true cross preserved by the abbey attracted the devotion of the pilgrims of Saint-Jacob. This abbey is on the territory of old the Diocèse of Lodève, whereas the abbey of Aniane near is on that of Maguelonne.
