History

The Company of the Ices is founded by Colbert in 1665 in order to allow France a less dependence with the Venetian productions of glass. This one is established with Saint-Gobain in 1693, it will pass the industrial revolution while obtaining an artificial soda factory (1806) then will change statute into 1830 to become a Public limit company. In spite of an always favorable turnover, years 1960 are difficult for Saint-Gobain: the profit margins weaken, the rate of debt increases and the shareholding is dispersed. It is in this context that Boussois-Souchon-Neuvesel (BSN) lance a tender offer on Saint-Gobain in December 1968, this one will fail but leave bloodless Saint-Gobain and with court of availabilities. The company of Pont-à-Mousson account, at this time there, of important availabilities and its imposing presence in the sector of the iron and steel industry (world leader of the cast iron pipe) confer a weight to him which make possible a fusion with Saint-Gobain, effective in 1970. This fusion, strongly encouraged by the government of Georges Pompidou, will give rise to a group of world scale. One can note that if, at the beginning, Pont-A-Mousson S.A. had more weight in the group, the situation was reversed and Saint-Gobain WFP (new name of the subsidiary company Pont-A-Mousson S.A.) does not have any more one enormous influence on the Saint-Gobain group. The only apparent sign of the fusion still of topicality is the presence of the bridge, symbol of Pont-à-Mousson, in the logo of the Saint-Gobain group. After the arrival of the left to the capacity in 1981, the group is nationalized in 1982 for finally being privatized in 1986. Under the achievements of the company, one can in particular quote the Pyramide of Louvre.
