Chronology of the name
It is on April 11th 1325, in the will of Guillaume de Coëtmohan (cantor of the cathedral of Tréguier), established at the time of the foundation of the college of Tréguier with Paris, which for the first time the name of Saint-Gilles appears. Saint-Gilles is a Trève of the parish of Pommerit-the-Viscount as of 1426 (files of Loire-Atlantique, B2980).The Saint-Gilles-the-Wood church is in the beginning a domanial Chapelle belonging to the Coëtmohan family (originating in the Merzer). One found there also formerly a hospital located near the Carry-Red. Templiers (village of Kerhars) and the Hospital ones of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem (Kerdanet and the Midsummer's Day vault of the Temple) had formerly goods with Saint-Gilles-the-Wood.
Since 1451, Saint-Gilles-the-Viscount is a parish branch of Pommerit-the-Viscount (letters of Nicolas V, n° 1077). It is set up in parish in 1676. It becomes an independent parish on August 7th 1715. The old Saint-Gilles-the-Wood parish depended formerly on évêché on Tréguier, the subdelegation of Guingamp and the royal spring of Lannion. The cure was a laic patronage, presented, in 1780, by the duke of Lorge, lord of the place.
Saint-Gilles-of-wood elects its first municipality at the beginning of 1790 and becomes chief town of a canton of 1790 to year X. Saint-Gilles-of-Wood then changes temporarily name for that of Bellevue. The old denomination is taken again in 1815. Saint-Gilles-the-wood yields in 1833 to the commune of Trévérec the enclave of Kerionou (law of April 29th, 1833).
